In 1993 the Giants of Jazz label released a collection drawing upon seven different Verve albums by Anita O'Day (1919-2006), a skilled and at times somewhat formidable vocalist who had the kind of chops and temperament usually associated with trumpeters, drummers, and booking agents. Recorded in early December 1955, "Honeysuckle Rose" first appeared on the album This Is Anita; technically speaking, this track falls outside of this collection's stated timeframe of 1956-1962. "Stompin' at the Savoy" and "Don't Be That Way" come from Pick Yourself Up, an LP that took almost all of 1956 to create. "Star Eyes" as well as tracks one through seven were taken from Anita O'Day Sings the Winners, a 1958 release that found her backed by a somewhat slick orchestra under the direction of Russ Garcia. Anita O'Day seems to have spent a lot of time in the recording studios during April 1959; during that month she made a Cole Porter album with Billy May (cuts 13 through 21) and collaborated with Jimmy Giuffre on the Cool Heat album, from which "Hershey Bar" was extracted. During 1962 this stunning woman made an LP with Gene Harris and the Three Sounds (see track eight "Whisper Not") and teamed up with vibraphonist Cal Tjader on the marvelous Time for Two album, the source for her rendition of Dave Frishberg's pleasantly smutty opus, "Peel Me a Grape."Review by arwulf arwulf, Allmusic.com
It's hard to dislike this album, although there are better deals that document Anita's Verve Years. For one, I would go with 8 Classic Albums, which is slightly more expensive with a lot more tracks. However, this album contains some true gems.
Since as of the date of this review there is no track listing for this album I am providing one (and their source albums).
The first seven tracks, plus track 23 are from her 1958 album titled Anita O'Day Sings The Winners. They are: Take the A Train, Early Autumn, Four Brothers, My Funny Valentine, Sing, Sing, Sing, What's Your Story Morning Glory, Peanut Vendor and Star Eyes.
Track 8, Whisper Not, is from one of my favorite albums titled Anita O'Day And The Three Sounds. Sadly this is the only track that is from that amazing album.
Stomping at the Savoy and Don't Be That Way (tracks 9 & 11) are from Pick Yourself Up, while Hershey Bar (track 10) is from Cool Heat and Peel Me a Grape (track 12) is from Time For Two (another album I absolutely love and wish was better represented in this collection.)
Tracks 13-21 are from Swings Cole Porter, consisting of Just One of Those Things, Love for Sale, Easy to Love, I Get a Kick Out of You, What Is This Thing Called Love, Night and Day, Get Out of Town, I've Got You Under My Skin, and De-Lovely. Somehow the producer managed to include every one of my favorites!
Interestingly, the next-to-last track - Honeysuckle Rose - is from her first Verve album, This Is Anita.
Overall, this is a solid collection of Anita's Verve years, and are drawn from albumsnext-to-last that are more centered on orchestral arrangements and backing (two exceptions are tracks 8 and 12.) If you are new to Anita's music this is a good starting place for her post-Swing era work, although I recommend that you check 8 Classic Albums before making a final purchase decision.Review by Mike Tarrani, Amazon.com TOP 100 Reviewer
