Because of their essential similarities, these two Bach cantatas can be considered companion pieces. Indeed one almost has the sense that they are different ways of solving one and the same task, that they are variants of a kind. The links are close despite the fuct that the two cantatas were written for different feast days ("Kreuzstab" for the 19th Sunday after Trinity, and "Ich habe genung"* for the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary). They are both solo cantatas (more precisely bass cantatas) in which solo vocal recitatives alternate with arias. They resemble each other in their treatment of tonality and structures, but most importantly of all they both centre around death, the joyful, almost impatient death-wish of the faithful . The cantatas concern life and death; this earthly life is presented as the scene of tribulations or at least of a fervent, unfulfilled longing for the Redeemer, while the world after death, gladly awaited, is identified with perfect bliss. This essential identity aside, the differences are of secondary significance: the imagery used to convey the same state of mind differs to some degree; Cantata No. 56 closes with a four-part chorale, and No. 82 with a third aria.
