Candi Staton - Candi & Young Hearts Run Free [Deluxe Edition] (2013)

This 2013 release from the U.K. Edsel label (via Rhino) bundles Candi Staton's first two Warner Bros. albums: Candi, released in 1974, and Young Hearts Run Free, released in 1976.

Candi Staton racked up several Southern soul/R&B hits on Muscle Shoals producer Rick Hall's Fame label: "I'd Rather Be an Old Man's Sweetheart (Than a Young Man's Fool)," "Never in Public," "Sweet Feeling," a cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man," and "He Called Me Baby." Staton and Hall continued to have hits after the singer signed with Warner Bros. (the smoldering "As Long As He Takes Care of Home").

During the mid-'70s, she began working with Los Angeles-based songwriter/producer David Crawford. Working at Sound City Studios, the singer's sessions listed drummer Ollie E. Brown; bassist Scott Edwards; guitarists Ray Parker Jr. and Jay Graydon; Motown percussionist Jack Arnold; keyboardists Sylvester Rivers, Sonny Burke, and Michael Boddicker; and background singers Deniece Williams and Rochelle Runnells of Stargard. Because she had several concert dates lined up, Staton had to overdub all her lead vocals for the upcoming album in one day. One track from the sessions, "Young Hearts Run Free," became the singer's biggest hit, going to number one R&B and number 20 pop in the summer of 1976. The Young Hearts Run Free LP included the similar-sounding Top 30 R&B follow-up "Run To Me," "Destiny," the lush sensual cut "Summer," and a sweet cover of Al Green's "Living for You." Later Staton had Top 20 R&B hits with a cover of the Bee Gees' "Night on Broadway" and "Victim." A 1995 Warner Bros. CD, Young Hearts Run Free: The Best of Candi Staton, included several of her hits. During the '80s and '90s, the singer began recording gospel albums, including the 2000 Beracah CD Here's a Blessing.
