Cut City - Exit Decades [2007]

    Press biography
CUT CITY formed in 2002 around the local Deleted Art label, sort of the swedish counter-part to U.S. art-punk imprints like Three One G and Tapes Records. In May 2005 they issued a 4-song EP on the california-based Gold Standard Labs label, home to such acts as THE LOCUST, YEAR FUTURE, GOGOGO AIRHEART and many more. Drawing comparisons to groups such as ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN and JOY DIVISION as well as newer bands like MOVING UNITS and FRANZ FERDINAND they at the same time echo the past as much as the future. In February 2007, CUT CITY will release their debut full-length, EXIT DECADES, through Gold Standard Labs. Following that the band will venture on a european tour in March and hopefully a stint in the U.S. later that spring.

Album Review: David Mansdorf @ Losing Today, January 2007
    "Exit Decades" - CD
The first full length cd from Sweden's Cut City wastes little time establishing the trio as yet another strong contender in the modern post-punk revival. It's a good thing too, because at 9 songs and just over a half-hour, "Exit Decades" doesn't leave a lot of room for any wasted time. Opener "Like Ashes, Like Millions" establishes the sound that you hear over the next 34 minutes: A mix of older bands like Joy Division, Echo and The Bunnymen, U2 and newer bands cut from the same cloth like Interpol, Editors and Franz Ferdinand. Even with so many bands working in the same area, Cut City manages to impress with their taught-yet-grand songs that make excellent use of danceable rhythms, delay-pedal guitar-scapes, and Max J. Hansson's vocals that posses a bit of the same stark spookiness that Ian Curtis had, yet still retain a certain uniqueness. Although it's impressive, "Exit Decades" isn't perfect: None of the songs on it are as immediately memorable as the four songs on Cut City's debut EP (if you're not familiar with the group, start here for a real treat), and the keyboards on "Anticipation" sound a little too close to the more dated aspects of their 1980's. Those few flaws aside, "Exit Decades" is a strong and compelling listen that should win the band some new fans and with a February 6th release, it already has me reserving a slot in my year-end Top Ten albums of 2007 list.
