Midnight Run is a 1988 American action-comedy film directed by Martin Brest and starring Robert De Niro and Charles Grodin. The film's score was composed by Danny Elfman, with the album released by MCA Records.

Well; actually, not this date in particular: "Midnight's" initial release date was July 20th, 1988. But; De Niro, Grodin & company are "Guaranteed to raise a smile." I was fortunate enough to purchase this CD a couple weeks ago from an Amazon seller. I see that it's once again unavailable. If you do discover a copy on either Amazon or EBay; you'd better buy it pretty quick, and be prepared to spend some money for it!

My copy was an excellent condition (for being released in Sept. of 1988). Despite the warning: "This CD may contain some tape hiss and other anomalies that exist with analog recordings;" the sound is awesome! The booklet isn't too exciting: the only photo is the painting on the front of De Niro & Grodin. Of course; I bought this for Danny Elfman's score. There are 24 tracks total, with an average time of about a minute a piece. I like the title, "Potato Walk" for track 16.

According to IMDb, "Danny Elfman wrote lyrics for the end credits theme "Try to Believe." He sang the lead and recorded it with his band Oingo Boingo under the guise of "Mosley & the B-Men. This version only appears on the soundtrack album." I was a bit disappointed that the end credits instrumental (from the DVD) isn't included on the soundtrack album. However; Elfman's song is a nice little touch. The lyrics in the song refer to Jack Walsh: "It's so hard to find an answer. It's so hard to stand alone. It's so hard to find the feeling that was buried long ago. It's so hard to trust another, when it's easier to hide. It's so hard to believe, unless we try baby try…"

This soundtrack is definitely not one to be underrated. I don't know how "Midnight" would be as superb without it?! Sorry Chris Griffin; but I'll take Elfman any day over John Williams for this movie!

    Review by R. Vaughn, Amazon.com

I love this movie and the soundtrack is truly one of the finest that I have ever heard. It is amazing to see how very simple melodies can be so powerful, and of course it suits by each and every bit to the movie. In my opinion, a fine soundtrack has a big part to play in a fine movie and this one could not have been better.

Only thing that you should be aware of is that this is not a digital recording. The soundtrack CD is transfer from an analog tape, although it is mentioned on the CD that it may contain anomalies like hiss etc. that are characteristic for analog tapes - I thought the quality was very good. If there were some anomalies they were not perceptible to me.
