Baldassare Galuppi was extremely popular during his lifetime, and according to more than one contemporary source he died the wealthiest Italian composer of the 18th century. Though primarily remembered for his contribution to the development of opera (he wrote more than 100), Galuppi also composed an abundance (148 works as of last count) of oratorios, cantatas, motets, and masses. Utilizing a score that Galuppi composed earlier, conductor Filippo Maria Bressan and the Academia de li Musici and the Athestis Chorus offer a reconstruction of a service that may have taken place in 1766 during Advent at St. Marks in Venice, where Galuppi held his long-standing position of musical director.
Galuppi’s opening Concerto a quattro in D major provides an engaging and musically promising introduction to a program that rarely achieves the same level of excitement. For instance, the following Kyrie by Galuppi’s apprentice and eventual successor Ferdinando Bertoni relies haplessly on convention, with its uninspired, painfully predictable rhythmic structure. Following this, Galuppi’s Gloria seems like a relative bastion of inspiration, especially in the vocal writing. Soprano Mariachiara Chizzoni delivers lovely performances of the “Laudamus te” and the especially challenging “Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris”, whose thrilling final sequence of high notes she negotiates beautifully. Countertenor Roberto Balconi’s solemn “Qui tollis peccata” also is beautifully done. Another pleasant if brief concerto follows, serving as an interlude before Galuppi’s final Credo.
Chandos’ sound is very fine, with the choir soloists projecting slightly forward.–John Greene
