After having lived in semi-obscurity ever since his deal with King/Federal fell through in the mid-1960s, the Blues Boom that was spreading across America and the UK in the late '60s gave Freddie King the opportunity to revive his career. He did so by signing on to Atlantic Record's subsidiary Cotillion.
Having been known mostly for his ferocious instrumental workouts ("Hide Away", "Just Pickin'", "San-Ho-Zay", "The Stumble"), soul genius and sax player King Curtis, who would produce the blues man's entire Cotillion output - decided to put an emphasis on King's vocal prowess as well. 'Freddie King Is a Blues Master' is therefore divided in a vocal and an instrumental side.
Side A kicks off with the strong King original "Play It Cool", a slow burning tune steeped in the finest Chicago Blues tradition and is followed by the romping, uptempo Little Milton cover "That Will Never Do".
King Curtis blows a mean horn on Freddie's adaptation of legendary R&B musician Chuck Willis, another great vehicle admonishing King's vocal grit and raw gutsiness.
There's more head-bobbing, lurching electrified Blues with "Blue Shadows", the 1950 hit by Lowell Fulson, and a slightly more horn heavy take on Helen Humes "Today I Sing the Blues" - also covered by the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin that same year.
Things get really funky and downhome with a greasy, sassy and brassy spin on Allen Toussaint's showstopper "Get Out of My Life Woman", the first track that features a decidedly soul groove for King to sing and solo over. Deliciously psychedelic keyboard here, too.
A part from the album's closer "Let Me Down Easy", Side B focuses excusively on King's guitar skills. A funked up, bass heavy rendition of Freddie's own "Hide Away" opens procedures and is criminally short. In the pocket drums, poppin' bass and punchy horns all around provide a relentlessly funky backdrop for King's biting 'heavy hand attack'.
The same goes for the well-titled "Funky", another monster jam even heavier on the wailing horns, while "Hot Tomato" - penned by King Curtis - sounds almost Booker T. & the MGs-ish, featuring a thick as mollasses Hammond organ purring over the stuttering groove. Freddie used his famed 'right hand dampening' technique here, creating short, muffled notes.
King adds another original, smoking instrumental in the guise of the soulful rock opus "Wide Open", with Freddie churning out a brooding, grinding, raspin' lick right at the start of the tune.
The instrumental adventure is brought to a close with King Curtis' boogie woogie fest "Sweet Thing".
A strong album, with only one shortcoming, one that led to Freddie himself leaving Cotillion after one more LP: his guitar sounds metallic and thinny, as if coming through a trebled-up speaker. Aside that, 'Freddie King Is a Blues Master' definitely demonstrated where King was heading.
