Szell's performance is again of quite a different order, one of the very finest ever put on disc, white hot even beyond Bernstein's. The late John Culshaw, producer at the sessions in Walthamstow Assembly Hall in 1962, used to enjoy telling the story of winding up an already angry George Szell. That inspired tyrant of a conductor was furious at the start of the session to find that many players were not the same as those who had just given the concert performance with him. When he came back to listen to the first playback Culshaw deliberately kept the controls rather low, making the result seem dull. That prompted Szell, back on the podium, to unleash a force in the subsequent takes that has to be heard to be believed. It was a recording that was not released until after his death—he wouldn't allow it—but it was one of his very finest. It now sounds superb on CD, clean, forward and full, with thrillingly immediate brass. Tape hiss is audible, but you quickly forget that, and the interpretation at ideally chosen speeds has a freshness rarely matched. Jansons with his warmer, subtler recording brings more variety, more light and shade, as well as comparably high voltage. His manner in lyrical passages is also a shade more affectionate, but for a performance of a Tchaikovsky symphony that brings out the full incisive power of the piece Szell's account here is unsurpassed.
The Egmont fill-up is odd but attractive, and very well recorded in Vienna's Sofiensaal. From the complete incidental music the numbers here are the Overture, the two entr'actes, the two songs—with Pilar Lorengar—and the final brief Victory symphony.
