Sweet beautiful soul from one of the all-time greats, "Let's Straighten It Out" features Gwen in a more mellow soul vein-copping a sweet bit of funky keyboard work from Latimore, whose great track she redoes as the title cut. Other cuts include "Cradle Of Love", "Your Love Is Worse Than A Cold Love", and "Early Morning Love". Even better is the great album "Melody Of Life". The album has more of a modern soul sound than her other albums for the label, thanks to some sweet mellow production work by Betty Wright. The cuts are great, with a stone-cold mellow groovin' sound that shows that Gwen was still working on her style, changing it and expanding it past the fame of her big mid-70s recordings. Titles include "All This Love I'm Givin", "I Can Only Think Of You", "I Found A Love", "The Melody Of Life", and "The Joy".

Two overlooked gems from Miami soulstress Gwen McCrae. Let's Straighten It Out is a killer bit of southern soul – very much in the best tradition of Miami work of the time, but which also takes Gwen into even deeper territory vocally! The record's got a mature depth that we totally love – a quality that shows the key "adult" transitions that were going on in the Miami studios of the 70s – as southern soul was shaking off its rougher roots, and going for a more sophisticated audience – yet still managed to keep all the raw power and honest emotion that made the genre so great in the first place. Most tracks here are in a mellow or midtempo mode, and there's surprisingly little club-oriented tracks on the set. Titles include a killer remake of Latimore's "Let's Straighten It Out", plus "Love Insurance", "Cradle Of Love", "At Bedtime", and "Early Morning Love", an excellent number by the great Sam Dees. Melody Of Life is different, but totally great – and the record that first set the tone for Gwen McCrae's dancefloor classics for Atlantic in the 80s! The album has Gwen shaking off some of the southern soul of her roots – stretching the genre out to hit notes that are much more in tune with modern soul of the time – a warmly sophisticated approach that uses Gwen's vocals to best effect on a variety of adult themes, but which also kicks in some great midtempo and mellow grooves on the set. A perfect example of this is the album's sublime stepper "All This Love I'm Givin" – a track that works perfectly on the dancefloor, yet which also has a heck of a lot of deep soul too – and the rest of the album follows in a similarly sublime sort of groove. Titles include "All This Love I'm Givin", "I Can Only Think Of You", "I Found A Love", "The Melody Of Life", and "The Joy". 14 tracks in all.
