Intruder may not have been Nashville's first but they were definitely the city's best-known thrash band. Veterans of various local punk and metal outfits, Intruder built upon the speed metal sound pioneered by bands like Metallica and Megadeth, adding elements of what would later become known as "progressive metal" to their unrelenting aural attack. Fueled by the phenomenal virtuosity of guitarist Arthur Vinett, the throaty growl of vocalist James Hamilton, and the songwriting skills of drummer John Pieroni, Intruder built a large cult following across the United States and in Europe on the strength of their brutal live performances. A Higher Form of Killing, the band's second album and their first for Metal Blade Records, picks up the pace pretty much where Intruder had left off with their self-produced debut, Live to Die. Taking its title from the groundbreaking 1982 book on chemical and biological warfare by British journalists Robert Harris and Jeremy Paxman, Pieroni's lyrics on A Higher Form of Killing mix a high-tech doom-and-gloom worldview with a science-fiction landscape that has much in common with Voivod. "The Martyr" compares Middle Eastern suicide bombers with radical Christian fundamentalists, "Genetic Genocide" touches upon DNA therapy a decade or so before its widespread use, and "Killing Winds" explores the use of chemical weapons on the battlefields of Europe. The high point of A Higher Form of Killing, however, is a manic cover of the Monkees' hit "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone," the pop/rock chestnut revved up and delivered with all the subtlety of the business end of a sledge-hammer. A strong collection of chainsaw speed metal, A Higher Form of Killing put the so-called band from "Thrashville" on the musical map alongside genre giants like Nuclear Assault.

Intruder are another one of those "overlooked" and "underapreciated" thrash bands that never went anywhere in terms of fame and fortune. Being virtually unknown to even some of the diehard fans of the thrash metal genre, its no wonder as to why this band faded away unoticeably. However when looking back retrospectively on their history and their impressive catalogue of albums, there seems to be even LESS people who are familiar with this EP.

So, let me tell you all about it. First off, the opening track "25 or 6 to 4", is actually a remake of a song that was originaly done by Boston. The song has now been transformed into a speed metal version and the authenticity of the original is not lost. Vocaly, the song is extremley powerful and the justice is definately warranted to the song, maintaining a very cool homage to its creators. Second, we have the title track "Escape From Pain". A conceptual song that is loosely based on a novel of a prisoner of war. Lyrically the song soars and is one of the two best songs on this album. Its actually a rather epic song with countless time changes and structure changes in a style not too far removed from say, The Frayed Ends Of Sanity. Clocking in at around 9 minutes, the song actually manages to go by fairly quickly and does not drag on by any means. The listener is actually left wanting more. 3rd, we have "Cold Blooded Killer", which as you may have guessed is a song about a serial killer. Its got a really enjoyable structure to it and the music is very catchy and thrashy. This song is not fast or double bass driven, but it certainly doesn't lack for any intensity.

Track #4 is "Kiss Of Death", this song is based on the notorious hollywood mafia exploitation, otherwise known as "The Godfather". Again, lyrically the song is pretty decent and is very well sung. James Hamilton obviously has no problems hitting those high notes. This song is more derived from the speed metal genre, but its still got some thrashy moments and is a decent all around tune. The acoustic guitar intro is rather impressive as well. Last but not least we have "T.M., you paid the price". This song for me is the highlight of this classic EP. Its fast heavy and and shows just how talented this group of musical geniuses really were. The chorus is cathy as all hell and the vocal approach that is used is extremely convincing in the anger department.

Overall this EP should at the very least be aquired for its consistency since every song is worthy to be heard. The production is very good for the time it was released, and the songs are pieced together in perfect structure. This EP is highly recommended.

Thrash Metal / Technical Thrash

Intruder is an under-appreciated thrash act that despite being signed to Metal Blade Records probably escaped the attention of many thrashers because they were located in Nashville, TN instead of the Bay Area. They were obviously heavily influenced by Anthrax.

“Psycho Savant” is full of well-written songs with great riffs, effective transitions, and commanding solos that are important parts of the song. Bonus points awarded for lyrics about that classic Twilight Zone episode “It’s a Good Life”, probably my favorite episode (and its sequel) of the series that I’ve seen. This album has some technical playing at times, somewhere in the spectrum between the technicality of Anthrax and Toxik. The best songs to me are “Geri’s Lament (When)” and “It’s a Good Life” but really there aren’t any bad songs on this album. There’s also a really nice clean guitar intro to “Invisible” that is well above the types of melodies most thrash bands ever came up with.

Arthur Vinnett has to be one of the most underrated guitar players in thrash metal. His solos display technique and taste. They provide much more than just the obligatory musical interlude three quarters into a song and they really take the songs to the next level. Lead guitars are definitely the most technical aspect to this band but the rest of the band holds their own. Vocalist Jimmy Hamilton has a good melodic voice with good range and enunciation. He can definitely carry a tune but he’s perhaps not as smooth and controlled as someone like Joey Belladonna. John Pieroni’s drumming is also good and fits the songs well but sometimes he resorts to some annoying “cheat beats” on the faster parts (like on “It’s a Good Life”).

I subtracted a few points over a few minor issues. First of all, let me be clear that I don't believe any album is perfect. I believe there is always room for improvement for musicians to strive for. My rating reflects that belief. The production is pretty underwhelming and the rhythm guitar tone especially is just a bit too thin but it’s not unbearable. The songs also are just consistently too long even though there aren’t any particularly bad sections in any songs. Having a few long songs is fine for thrash but most songs here are over 6 minutes and that may be asking a bit too much from most thrash fans. Long thrash songs might have been more appropriate if this release had contained as many riffs and variations as Dark Angel’s “Time Does Not Heal”. As noted earlier, perhaps a bit of improvement in the drumming and vocal performance could have elevated this release a bit. Keep in mind though that I consider these criticisms to be relatively minor considering the number of things "Psycho Savant" has done well and I consider this album to be a gem of underground metal.

Intruder seem to get back together every few years to play shows in the U.S. and Europe so here’s to hoping for some more shows as well as another release from this talented band.

Intruder: Discography (1987-2004)

CD4: Intruder - Live To Die… Relived (2004)
EAC | Flac(Image) + Cue + Log & MP3 CBR 320Kbps

Thrash Metal / Technical Thrash

More known for country music and whiskey than as a hotbed for heavy metal, Tennessee is home to the thrash band Intruder. Live to Die is the band's 1987 debut release. This album laid the foundation for the band's deal with Metal Blade that would result in 2 subsequent full length releases, and an EP. Originally released on the Arza/Ironworks label, Hellion Records has re-released this album with all new artwork and 6 bonus tracks. The six bonus tracks are from the band's Transgressor (pre- Intruder name) era of 1984-1986.

Intruder deliver what you might expect from a mid 80's thrash band. However, I must say that the music is well performed, while the vocalist is very talented and adds a lot of flavor to the music. The lead vocalist sounds very similar to Steve Grimmett (Grim Reaper, Onslaught), with an interesting hint of David King (Fastway) evident at times. Having said that, I suppose that is no surprise that this album immediately reminded of Onslaught's In Search of Sanity, which features Grimmett on vocals. The tone of the album is set by the speedy drum beats, which let up very sparingly throughout the album. Intruder sound very tight on this album, with the thrashy riffs coming across very intricate yet forceful. Moreover, flashy solos and shredding are not in short supply. All of this combined to give the band a very energetic, and aggressive sound (when needed). Songs such as Victory in Disguise and Live to Die display some variety in the band's songwriting. These two cuts feature noticeable time and tempo changes, which keep the sound fresh and prevent the whole affair from becoming repetetive. Kiss of Death even features a Spanish sounding, acoustic intro, before blistering into a full out thrash assault. Intruder also makes use of some shouted choruses (ala Master of Puppets, In Search of Sanity, Forbidden, et al). Furthermore, Intruder have figured out how to make each song catchy, without sacrificing any of the heaviness or speed. This album is more than enough to get your neck moving and keep it moving until the last note. Even at 72 minutes long (including the bonus tracks), I found that I could listen to this CD straight through without getting bored. Intruder knew how to write good thrash songs, and that's probably why Hellion Records decided to reissue this album along with some additional, previously unreleased material. Like most other thrash bands at the time, Intruder faded away in the early 1990's after the unfortunate rise of grunge.

Fans of mid eighties thrash will surely find a lot to like with this album. Tight musicianship and all around pleasing songs will make this album a nice addition to any thrash fan's collection. The Transgressor (pre Intruder) bonus tracks included on this album are nearly, if not just as good as the Live To Die material. Hence, you're getting well over an hour's worth of music (14 tracks) on this CD. Not a bad bang for your buck in my opinion. As far as our quoting system goes, my 77 represents only the first eight tracks on this CD (the actual Live to Die album tracks). However, the strong quality of the six additional tracks makes this package much stronger and worthwhile.
