Of the great composers it was Schubert who devoted himself most seriously to the piano duet as an independent genre. He wrote more than 30 works for the medium, amongst which is some truly great music which is sadly under-represented in the catalogue.
Probably intended as part of a projected full-scale Sonata, Lebenssturme contains all the familiar fingerprints of Schubert's mature style. The response from Jeno Jando and Ilona Prunyi is a fine performance which is full of commitment and sympathy for this dramatic score. The passion of the stormier passages is effectively captured but, to my taste, they are not quite as successful in achieving the tranquil relief of the ppp second theme. The ensemble is generally well-balanced and accurate, though there is a strange note error (C sharp instead of D) in bar 573.
The drive and impetus in the performances of the two Marches, D968b (formerly D886) convey a wonderful sense of joie de vivre, and make it easy to understand why Liszt chose to orchestrate the first of the two under the title Reitermarsch.
Divertissement a l'hongroise D818. Less successful as a piece, there are passages of attractive Hungarian style which are given an idiomatic reading here. Only occasionally is the coordination less than perfect. The playing is enjoyable to listen to, and the performances are committed.
