This is the second album pairing Alfred Schnittke and Arvo Pärt from the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir. The first, released in 2018, brought the group a Gramophone Award, and the BIS label and conductor Kaspars Putniņš have apparently decided to stick with what works. Both albums are superb. Schnittke and Pärt haven't often appeared together on recordings, Schnittke's stylistically allusive language being miles away from Pärt's minimalism, a fine example of which is provided by the Seven Magnificat Antiphons heard here. However, Schnittke wrote the Choir Concerto and the Three Sacred Hymns shortly after his conversion to Christianity, and his language, although different from Pärt's, is similarly stripped down and devotional. They make an interesting contrast; Pärt, despite his simplicity, is actually the more formal of the two, even in these short antiphons. Schnittke's texts are based in old Russian church music and in the tradition of works setting them that runs through Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov; Pärt's are versions of the Great Advent Antiphons in German. For both composers, the choir once again delivers wonderful performances with a controlled, luminous sound that places the group firmly in the world's top rank. The sound of the bass section is uniquely rich. BIS once again captures the ambiance of Tallinn's St. Nicholas Church, an ideal venue. Worth hearing for any chorister who wants to know what's possible, and audiophiles will want the physical version with its hybrid SACD sound.–James Manheim
