Pressure Sounds return to the classic sound of seventies roots reggae after their mento collection a month or two ago and this time it’s a long overdue compilation of productions from the Tommy Cowan camp running the gamut from deep ‘n’ dark roots such as Mother Country by the amazingly named Little Madness to Ken Boothe’s typically tortured adaptation of The Godfather theme as Speak Softly Love and incorporating pretty much everything in between.

The Abyssinians are represented at their most urbane on the delightful Love Comes & Goes, Jacob Miller reports on the Ghetto On Fire, Desi Roots voices an inappropriate lascivious lyric atop a killer steppers riddim on School Tonight, Augustus Pablo is at his mystical best on the instrumental recut of I Kong’s majestic The Way It Is as The Way, Earl Zero’s staggering roots classics City Of The Weakheart and the original flyers cut to Please Officer are here with their amazing King Tubby’s dubs, Leroy Smart is represented by one of his most impassioned vocals on the Road Is Rough, as is Dennis Brown with Life Goes In Circles, Two Rasta Man aka Roman Stewart and Dean Stone (or is it brother Tinga?) offer another take on the same theme as Bob’s Jah Live on the killer roots False Rumour plus its dub, while Roman appears again with his popular Hit Song alongside the Dillinger version Natty Sings A Hit Song and its dub. Another winner from the Pressure Sounds team that will prove indispensable to all lovers of authentic old school reggae music. Essential.
