This is a delightful, inventive, witty, charming, enchanting, inspiring disc. I was blown away. I have long enjoyed the Bach trio sonatas (BWV 525-530), which are usually played on organ. My first recording of that was of John Butt playing an historic instrument owned by UC Berkeley, another outstanding disc. These trio sonatas are Bach at his most inventive, and that is saying a lot. In the Verbruggen disc, only four of the six sonatas appear together, plus one other trio sonata (BWV 1031). Perhaps Ms. Verbruggen thought that BWV 526 and 528 did not translate well to the recorder. In any event, the recorder and the harpsichord are outstanding here, as is the recording quality. Highest recommendation.

Review by Classical Eye

The Trio Sonatas, BWV525-30 invite the separation of the elements of soloist and obbligato keyboard which Bach delegated to a single organist, and selected sonatas have indeed been treated to a variety of subdivisions; two were even recorded by a Hungarian wind trio (Hungaroton) in the late 1970s. It is certainly a valid exercise, and no more so than when the partnership is that of flute (here fipple) and harpsichord. The annotator does not doubt that Bach was indeed the composer of the Flute Sonata, BWV1031 and, in the absence of solid proof to the contrary, neither perhaps should we, its attribution to Bach rather than anon. may not reflect historical truth but it does not misrepresent its quality. BWV525 and BWV1031 are both in the key of E flat and Marion Verbruggen, the arranger, has transposed them to G and F respectively, more comfortable keys for the recorder.

Verbruggen's technical facility is beyond question but, as I have remarked before, her musical sensitivity leaves something to be desired. There is a mechanical quality in her delivery and her apparent belief that notes have little hierarchical importance; admittedly, for instance, the capacity of the recorder to 'sigh' appoggiaturas is less than that of the flute but it is not as minimal as it is made to appear in these performances. The admirable Mitzi Meyerson does the best she can within such a rigid framework to show that she does not share such a belief. My admiration for the technical expertise of these recordings does not, I fear, quite extend to their interpretative qualities.'
