Matthew Reveles - Split (2019)

This album took me almost eight years and three attempts to record. During my first attempt, a hard drive crash erased the entirety of a nearly-completed album. I lost my mind for a little bit after that, but I eventually recovered from the loss, only to have my second try thwarted a couple of years later by a fried motherboard. Finally, with a Pro-Tools-7-running, fifteen-year-old Mac Book that by this point was a veritable Ship of Theseus given its new hardware, I was able to capture the songs for long enough to get them mixed, mastered, and pressed to vinyl.

This incarnation of the record was recorded over the past year or so. The tracking was split between my converted garage/studio/music room and a studio on the west side that belonged to my friends Justin and Russell. I played all the instruments myself, for better or worse (go easy on my drumming prowess), with the exception of the cello on December 11, which was performed by Mando Calrissian, and an organ part on Greek Pottery, to which Jeremy Locarni lent his hands. Eventually, Jalipaz at Audioconfusion mixed and mastered the tracks. They all did an awesome job, and I'm happy to share the finished product with you.

This split LP is a DIY amalgamation of tracks from both of my musical projects—the folksy/Americana 'Matthew Reveles' songs, and the poppy/indie/whatever Fancy Cloud tunes. Some of the songs are old, and some of them are new. Some are gritty and blemished, and some aspire to be sweet and sad and haunting. There are songs that expose very raw emotions, and there are songs that would ideally prompt some hootin' and hollerin'. Ultimately, there's one thing that all these tracks have in common: they pair well with a glass of your favorite whiskey.
