Pollini's traversal of Chopin's 19 Nocturnes (he leaves out the pair of posthumous ones) is one of his finest recordings in years. His long-lined yet detailed performances are comparable to the very different ones that have long stood at the pinnacle of recorded sets. Not as serene as Artur Rubinstein's, not as philosophical as Claudio Arrau's, nor as warm as Ivan Moravec's, Pollini's interpretations have their own allure. One is the way he shapes the melodies with a natural flow enhanced by his tonal beauty, less lean and streamlined than his usual way with Romantic music. Another is his careful attention to dynamics, as in the subtle gradations of tone found in Op.9 No.1, Op. 15 No 2, and others in the set. Yet another is his detailed articulation that yields trills of feathery lightness and brings out inner details without unduly spotlighting them. His pianissimo playing is radiant, pearly runs are seamlessly strung together, and climaxes like that in Op. 37 No.1 ring out boldly. And this paragon of the objective modern style indulges in discreet rubatos that bring life to the musical line and make you feel the music behind the notes.

Claudio Arrau claimed that the Nocturnes counted among the deepest, most searching of Chopin’s works. Whether or not Maurizio Pollini agrees, his intense, serious, and completely thought-through interpretations have little to do with moonlit introspection and salon-like charm. Whereas Arrau’s highly rhetorical style tugs and probes between the music’s lines, Pollini’s relatively brisk tempos largely proceed in straightforward, long-lined arcs, with discreet yet purposeful rubatos. The F-sharp Op. 15 No. 2 Nocturne is a case in point, and it reveals much more effective this piece is when it walks (like Josef Hofmann’s incomparable 1935 HMV test pressing) rather than drifts. At the same time, Pollini rarely misses important inner voices or counter melodies buried within the floating arpeggiated left hand accompanying patterns.

He is not averse to unleashing climaxes with a hard-hitting impact that can sound harsh and tonally undifferentiated in his concert performances, but not at all on disc. For example, the central episodes of Op. 15 No. 1 and Op. 55 No. 2 are appropriately agitated, yet Pollini still accounts for each note in its proper perspective. Listen to Op. 62 No. 1’s fluttery trills, Op. 27 No. 2’s gorgeously sculpted right-hand cantabile, and Op. 37 No. 2’s super-supple double thirds, and you’ll experience Pollini’s ironclad technique on rare form.

Of course, there are other valid options. On Cascavalle, Aldo Ciccolini recalls the expansive calm of Rubinstein’s mid-’60s stereo versions, and Ivan Moravec’s epic poetry refuses to cede its reference position. I also retain a fondness both for the slightly offhand, improvisatory aura Maria João Pires casts in DG’s previous Nocturnes cycle and for Earl Wild’s big-boned, grand-manner pianism (on Ivory Classics).

That said, Pollini realizes his conceptions with masterful authority and a sense of involvement that his recordings don’t always convey. I’d go so far as to say that the Nocturnes add up to Pollini’s finest recorded Chopin since his 1972 Etudes and 1960 E minor concerto. Like Moravec and Rubinstein, Pollini complies with the “traditional” canon of 19 Nocturnes and leaves out the posthumously-published C-sharp minor and C minor pieces available elsewhere. DG’s slightly distant, roomy, yet crystal-clear engineering appeals to me less than the close-up detail and warmth of the Arrau, Rubinstein, and Moravec Nocturne sets.

Maurizio Pollini's connection with Chopin goes back a long way - to the very beginning of his career, when he won the 1960 Chopin competition in Warsaw at 18. His earliest recordings (for EMI) were Chopin too: a mixed recital and an account of the First Piano Concerto that remains arguably the greatest recorded. His Chopin playing in those days stood out for its sovereign control, clarity and perfectly judged poetry, in a way that stripped away the accretions that generations of over-expressive interpretations had left on the music.

Pollini's performances have remained just as clear-eyed and technically immaculate to the present day, though his playing has acquired a tendency to be too severe, too highly wrought, so that, in a composer such as Schumann, the results can be unattractively strait-laced. And the Chopin recordings have continued; after Pollini signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon in the 1970s, he has returned regularly to the composer, beginning with a startling version of the Studies, and almost equally accomplished ones of the Preludes, Ballades, Polonaises and Scherzos. Now he tackles the Nocturnes, playing all 19 (he omits two more posthumously published ones) as a single sequence of exquisitely fashioned miniatures.

Their intimacy demands a very different response from that required for the larger-scale public statement of a piece such as a scherzo or a polonaise. By and large, however, the results are totally beguiling. Pollini's sound world - lean, perfectly cultivated, and always in sharp focus - may lack some of the warmth and spontaneity that other Chopin interpreters would bring to these pieces. But the way every melodic line is spun as a single thread of sound seems totally truthful to the bel canto impulse that lies behind so much of Chopin's invention. Just occasionally the results are too stiff, as if Pollini is unwilling to allow the natural sense of expressive line to override the music's basic pulse completely, or to detach a melody from its accompaniment sufficiently for the tune to float free. But those are only occasional blemishes. Far more of the playing is superb, aristocratic and utterly serious in a way that remains perfectly scaled to the dimensions of each individual nocturne - none of which lasts more than six minutes, yet each of which manages to summon up an immense range of feeling within that tiny frame.
