Michael Learns to Rock (also known as MLTR) is a Danish pop/soft rock band that performs songs in English. Formed in 1988, the band has sold over 11 million records worldwide, mainly in Asia, and in addition, another 6 million or more paid downloads for their single "Take Me To Your Heart" which was awarded "most downloaded single of the year 2006". The band has recorded eight studio albums as well as a number of live and greatest hits albums. The band's eighth studio album, Scandinavia, was released in 2012.

Michael Learns To Rock was formed in the spring of 1988 by singer and keyboard player JASCHA RICHTER (born 1963), drummer KÅRE WANSCHER (born 1969), guitarist MIKKEL LENTZ (born 1968) and bassist SØREN MADSEN (born 1967). In that summer the band won a local talent competition and started out on a nearly-two-years-long tour around Denmark. Playing wherever possible, winning an ever-growing audience and having both talent and musical skills, the songs sharpened along the way. After months of hard work in the studio, the band released their self-titled debut album in September 1991. Among the fine songs on the album is the smash hit “The Actor” that got wall-to-wall airplay from Danish radio stations and helped the album reach the top of the Danish sales chart in January 1992. Later that year “The Actor” wemt #1 on the charts in Norway, Sweden, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. The next year, the band toured intensively in Denmark and visited new friends in Asia. Along the way, Jascha Richter wrote songs for their second album “Colours”, released in October 1993. Great ballads like “Sleeping Child” and “25 Minutes” are the main singles that secured combined albums sales passing the 1 million mark.

Michael Learns To Rock toured Europe and Asia in the next couple of years and in 1995, their third album “Played On Pepper”, is released all over Scandinavia and in Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, France, Italy, Brazil, South Africa, Japan, the United Arab Emirates and 11 countries in Southeast Asia. October of that same year saw the bansd on a huge Asian tour, with 25 concerts in 10 countries. “That´s Why (You Go Away)” and “Someday” were new hits and “Played On Pepper” ended up selling more than 1,2 million albums. In 1996, “Paint My Love” was released. It was a greatest hits album exclusive for South East Asia. The album ended up selling more than 3,4 million copies – and made the band one of the biggest international acts ever in countries like South Korea, Thailand and Malaysia. The up-tempo hit “Something You Should Know” led the way for the fourth studio album “Nothing To Lose” which was released in 1997. The albums turned the band into superstars in South Africa. When Michael Learns To Rock played in Johannesburg and Pretoria in January 1998, the critics wrote: “This is as good (if not better!) a band as any current big name group out of America or the UK.”

“Greatest Hits” is a well-chosen title for an international collection of the band’s hits, out in 1999. Same year Søren Madsen left MLTR. Kåre, Jascha and Mikkel decided to continue as a trio, releasing their fifth studio album “Blue Night” in 2000. Early 2001, MLTR embarked on a five week tour covering Dubai, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and China. The tour was for promotion of the compilation “19 Love Songs”, which was only released in Asia and included then-new single “The Ghost Of You”. 2002 is a year-off for the three remaining members of the band, who are all working on individual projects, including the first solo album from Jascha, “Planet Blue”.

In 2004, the sixth studio album was released. Originally titled “Michael Learns To Rock” and later released in Asia as “Take Me To Your Heart”. The latter title was taken from the album’s lead single, a re-make of popular Chinese singer Jacky Cheung´s “Goodbye Kiss”. 2005 saw the band back in Asia, playing concerts in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam and China (a gig in the pit during the Formula 1 race in Shanghai). Michael Learns To Rock also returned to India for the first time since 1996, with shows in Bangalore, Mumbai and Shillong. “Take Me To Your Heart” became another huge hit – and by the end of 2006 it was rewarded with the prize of “Most-downloaded song of 2006″, after more than 6 million paid downloads.

In 2007 MLTR released “The Live Adventures of Michael Learns to Rock” – a tour de force of hit singles played live. The seventh studio album “Eternity” was out in 2008, the first album with Mikkel Lentz being the sole producer. The album included the Thailand #1 single “Sweetest Surprise” and the more surprising Asian hit “It´s Gonna Make Sense”, getting very popular when used in Philippine reality show “Pinoy Big Brother”. To mark their northern roots, studio album number eight is titled “Scandinavia”. Released in 2012 it comes with new potential classics as “Renovate My Life” and “Any Way You Want It” (with the video shot in Kathmandu, Nepal).

From 2007 to 2012 Michael Learns to Rock have played another 87 concerts in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Denmark, China, India and Singapore. And more than 20 years into their career, new markets are still opening for the band, with first time concerts in Nepal (2011) and Bangladesh (2012). The total number of concerts the band has done is approaching 500 – and there is no sign of them stopping…

It sold 180,000 copies in Scandinavia, and 250,000 copies in the rest of the world. The album includes their signature song "The Actor", which charted at number one in Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines.

This is NO "boyband!" Michael Learns To Rock is an eclectic mix with a unique sound. They are pop, rock, and dash of contemporary country, believe it or not. This is my opinion anyway. As with their other albums, every song on this one stands on its own. MLTR performs various styles but still remains true. Colours should appeal to those who like all types of music. There is the beautiful ballad of "Sleeping Child." Rock songs such as "Wild Women" and "I'm Gonna Come Back." Finally, there's the love-loss story told in "25 Minutes," which sounds a little "contemporary country" with both its music and the lyrics. Overall, a great album.

Since 1995, when I first heard MLTR's tracks, I've never been able to let go. For the person like me who's not much into today's hip hop, rap, pop or techno but would like a mix of classic, country and blues …. any MLTR album is for you. Wherever I go, I'm always searching for MLTR and their CD's is one thin I can't live without when I travel. I'm from Fiji and when I arrived into London, I went straight for the store just to search for their tracks. I found it and it has made my stay very exciting.

If you're into hard metal stuff, avoid this. If you like ballads (these are the good type, not the cheesy crap you get from the newer groups) go for these. They aren't heard much in the states, more's the pity, but MLTR is really cool. Try them. Favourites from me include the title track 'Nothing to Lose' and 'Romantic Balcony'.

Michael Learns To Rock is the biggest internationally successful soft-pop musical band to come out of Denmark. Their music is known for their pop songs with a blend of the Scandinavian musical euphony. The band is comprised of (as of now) - Jascha Richter (singer and keyboard player), Kåre Wanscher (drummer), and Mikkel Lentz (guitarist). (Bass guitarist Søren Madsen left MLTR in 2000 to enhance his solo career)

This collection is amazing to listen at a stretch, and I am writing about the songs I liked most in it -

- Strange Foreign Beauty (10/10) - Great 'strange music' when the song begins. Similarly amazing voice of Jascha Ricter. Good, slow electric guitar piece music towards the end of the song.
- Someday (10/10) - A fast paced song sung by a lover giving hope to his girl. Nice guitar interludes and chorus singing
- Sleeping Child (10/10) - From their album - Colours, this is a passionate song about the sleeping child. Nice guitar piece music
- Complicated Heart (9/10) - A sad-to-happy song, slow, soulful lyric. Nice acoustic guitar music
- Something You Should Know (8/10) - A sad song with the MLTR touch - the song of a lover looking at his girl of the past
- That's Why (You Go Way) (10/10) - One of my favorites - great piano music piece in the beginning, appropriate chorus in the ending of the song, a sad story of a love-lorn lover
- The Actor (10/10) - A good typical teenage song - great chorus, acoustic guitar music
- Wild Women (10/10) - A fast paced funny song - (quote)

- Breaking My Heart (8/10) - A sad but good song with nice chorus singing
- I'm Gonna Be Around (8/10) - Nice chorus and guitar interludes. Chorus dominates here!
- I'm Gonna Come Back (9/10) - The song of a lover who is leaving for war, reassuring that he will return from the war and bring things back to normal
- Romantic Balcony (9/10) - A romantic ballad type song with the lover's thoughts flashing back and forth between war scenes and their tranquil balcony. Nice guitar piece and chorus singing
- Sleeping Child (Special Remix) (10/10) - A lullaby-type song, with more than just singing to the child. Smooth, nice chorus and guitar/Piano music combination.

If you enjoy melodious songs with beautiful lyrics and catchy tunes, then this collection could be for you. Give it a try !!!

This is one of the best albums by Michael Learns To Rock. It starts with a major hit, 'Angel Eyes' which is very lively and has an unusual re-mixed beat. 'More Than A Friend' is beautiful song, simple and a little sentimental, mainly because one of the band members, Soren Madsen wrote it before he left the band and the way frontman Jascha Richter sings it. 'You Took My Heart Away' and 'Blue Night' are perfect love songs to play especially on a winter's night. This is a great album by a band whose motto is "We're strictly about music", Danish and sings just as good as my favourite British and American bands (if not better, Jascha, Mikkel Lentz and Kare Wanscher rock!). I would recommend getting this album from Denmark because the original album has 'One Way Street', 'Whatever It May Take', 'Stuck In The Heat' and 'Eternal Flame', all great rock ballads (in English, of course) that funnily enough this British edition has left out. The last track (12th) on this album is 'Fools Direction', an easy listening love song (like the Bee Gees) which is perfect to play late night. Perfect songs to play in the summer are 'One Way Street', 'Eternal Flame', 'Stuck In The Heat', 'More Than a Friend' and 'Angel Eyes'. My favourite songs in this album are: 'You Took My Heart Away', 'Blue Night', 'One Way Street', 'Stuck In the Heat', 'More Than A Friend', and 'Fool's Direction'. I loved this album for 5 years and I was very lucky to get it as a gift from a friend in Denmark, which has more songs than this British edition one. MLTR rocks forever!
