Famous as its title has become through Carl Orff's work of the same name, the original Carmina burana—a German manuscript collection of mostly secular songs, probably compiled in the early thirteenth century—is all but unknown to modern listeners. That it should be so is hardly surprising, since many of the pieces in the manuscript pose formidable editorial problems (inasmuch as they can be deciphered at all), and since virtually nothing is known about the manner in which they would have been performed and accompanied, nor about the circumstances under which they would have been heard. In short, it is improbable that any twentieth-century performance of songs from Carmina burana will ever come close to the original experience, and it would certainly be fairer to describe such modern reconstructions as the present one as little more than exotic entertainments loosely inspired by material from the manuscript, much as Orff's cantata is. On this record, first issued in 1975, René Clemencic has produced an interpretation that is fanciful, vividly colourful and reasonably entertaining. To have made it otherwise would have been to deny the music any artistic (by today's standards) or even commercial value. Enjoy his vision of Carmina burana for what it is, then, but do not be tricked into thinking that you are eavesdropping on something authentically medieval, as the words "version originate" on the sleeve might imply, for you are not. In case you still have any doubts about precisely what you will find on this record, let me briefly describe its contents. There are 20 tracks in total, few of which exceed three minutes in duration. All are primarily melodic, though in every case Dr Clemencic has devised an instrumental accompaniment, sometimes elaborate and fantastic, sometimes positively orchestral, and in general so meticulously prepared and rehearsed that virtually all sense of spontaneity has been eliminated. On the tracks that have singers, you may expect to hear plenty of mock drunkenness and lasciviousness, as well as the more familiar sounds of love plaints and other kinds of yearning. If this all sounds vaguely familiar, you are probably thinking of Orff's cantata; and if you enjoy the latter, then you may well derive equal pleasure from this close relation.
