Limited bookbound edition. 2016 release from the British singer/songwriter. Familia follows her #4 charting and silver certified album Wanderlust, which marked a critically acclaimed change in musical direction for Sophie. Released in January 2014, Wanderlust went on to spend six months in the UK chart and gave Sophie her first top 10 record since 2007's Trip The Light Fantastic. Wanderlust has gone on the sell in excess of 100,000 copies. Familia's lead track, 'Come With Us', brings with it a touch of Sophie's original disco sound. Upbeat from start to finish, it is an instant disco-pop track that is as modern as it is retro with a completely addictive chorus. Sophie says it is "what happens when Ed Harcourt and I write rour on the floor. It is a live disco song about the lure of a cult." Familia features 11-tracks, which continue to showcase Sophie's newfound lyrical and musical maturity, from the beautiful and emotive 'Unrequited' to the synth-laded ballad 'Death Of Love' and the alt-pop buoyant opener 'Wild Forever'.
Reuniting with collaborator Ed Harcourt, Sophie Ellis-Bextor offers an explicit sequel to the sophisticated cinematic pop of Wanderlust with Familia. Like that 2014 affair, Familia is lush and romantic, bearing a widescreen sensibility that contrasts nicely with Ellis-Bextor's natural reserve. She may be somewhat distant – part of her charm is her glamorous remove; she doesn't beg the audience for its affection – but she can scale the heights of Harcourt's arrangements, no matter if they're galloping neo-disco ("Wild Forever," "Come with Us") or overblown ballads ("Crystallise"). Much of Familia lies between these two extremes, but the midtempo adult alternative pop is sharp and clever: witness all the mariachi accents on "Hush Little Voices," something that finds a counterpart with the flamenco rhythms of the closer, "Don't Shy Away," or how "Here Comes the Rapture" maintains its tension via staccato strings. Familia is self-conscious, self-styled sophisticated pop, but its self-awareness is what makes it work: Ellis-Bextor and Harcourt work as hard at creating an alluring atmosphere as they do on the bones of the songs, and the result is striking and effective.Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Allmusic.com
Sophie Ellis-Bextor's sixth solo album (seventh overall) comes two years after her nice detour "Wanderlust", finds her returning to the genre that made her extremely popular, that is disco. Over half of the tracks here sounds like they would fit comfortably on "Trip the Light Fantastic" as in they fit that albums disco and pop-rock sounds and a handful sounds like outtake for a lot more uptempo "Wanderlust". Here SEB sounds a lot more mature, that is probably because Ed Harcourt returns to handle the production side. The album is as usual awesome from start to finish with some tracks standing out from others like the 70's disco-esque lead singe "Come With Us", the 80s Duran Duran sounding "Death of Love" which sounds like she covered an 80s song using modern methods; "Here Comes the Rapture" sounds like it would fit in perfect with her previous with his striking violins and her posh soaring vocals. Also of note are "Cassandra", "My Puppet Heart", and "The Saddest Happiness" with the latter of the three songs sounding like they would also fit on "Fantastic and "Cassandra" sounding like an extremely too uptempo song for "Wanderlust". With Familia SEB has finally released an even numbered album that sounds just even and fantastic as her odd numbered ones (i.e. "Read My Lips", Trip the Light Fantastic", and Wanderlust").
