Stanley Newcomb (,,Stan") Kenton played an important role in the history of jazz. His romantic symphonic reply to the fiery bebop big bands could be compared to a declaration of war against the conventional, the traditional. His artistic productions had ,,body", both in a positive and negative sense. The pianist, bandleader, composer and arranger made his mark through tremendous enthusiasm for innovations. He tried out new directions in putting together unusual instrument constellations. This created on the one hand a creative way of making music and on the other hand a specific orchestral sound. His almost oversized band lineup created a sound that was almost pompous and threatened to suffocate the true jazz elements.
