On Soli, Tamsin Waley-Cohen's 2015 release on Signum Classics, the violinist explores modernist repertoire composed between 1944 and 2005. Because these solo violin pieces by Béla Bartók, George Benjamin, Krzysztof Penderecki, Elliott Carter, and György Kurtág are challenging for both the player and the listener, one should approach this CD with some awareness that they reflect different phases of the avant-garde movement that dominated music in the last half of the 20th century. In quieter selections where the moods are primarily brooding or lyrical, Waley-Cohen produces a vibrant tone and smooth phrasing that make her playing easy to appreciate, even when the music isn't recognizably tonal. However, in louder, dissonant passages, notably in sections of the Bartók Sonata, Benjamin's Canon for Sally, Carter's Remembering Aaron, and Kurtág's Anziksz Kellerannanak, the close microphone placement makes her bowing sound overly resinous and scratchy, which can be hard to enjoy. Even so, few violinists dare approach this bracing material, and Waley-Cohen is to be commended for devoting a whole album to such cutting-edge pieces solely on her terms, without making compromises.Review by Blair Sanderson, Allmusic.com
The opening of the Bartók Sonata is powerful and arresting, and there’s passion and musical imagination throughout, the fiendish multiple stops and alternations between bowed and plucked notes assured in tone and precise in intonation. I’m not so sure about Tamsin Waley-Cohen’s slow tempo in the first movement: what starts out being improvisatory can morph into caution, and there needs to be an even wider range of colour to reflect Bartók’s imaginative writing. Still, there is contrast between the aggressive ‘Fuga’ and the more yielding and intimate ‘Melodia’, while the final Presto restores the microtones which Yehudi Menuhin edited out of the first printed edition. He found more performance energy though.
Apart from Penderecki’s empty, over-long Cadenza, the rest of the CD shows composers at the top of their game in a series of shorter pieces. Benjamin’s include a restless canon and a lullaby; one of Carter’s Lauds remembers Aaron Copland, complete with a brief passage of jazzy syncopation; the other, more rhapsodic, the leader of the Juilliard Quartet. Waley-Cohen is at her most persuasive in Kurtág’s masterful Six Miniatures, which span a wide range of moods, from the angry to the tenuous and tentative.Review by Martin Cotton, BBC Music Magazine
