The Smile - A Light for Attracting Attention (2022)

Since their last album in 2016, A Moon Shaped Pool, the members of Radiohead have been quietly going about their business solo between two reissues, O'Brien on his first album, Philip Selway on a soundtrack… And then, in May 2021, at On the occasion of a livestream of the famous English festival Glastonbury, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood unveiled the most substantial of all these side projects with The Smile, a supergroup founded with Tom Skinner, the drummer of the Sons of Kemet of Shabaka Hutchings, the formation most popular of London Jazz. In the hitch, we also find the irremovable producer Nigel Godrich, the string section of the London Contemporary Orchestra and a brass section made up of the finest blades of contemporary English jazz such as Chelsea Carmichael and Byron Wallen. Not bad for a record composed to pass the time during confinement!

Exciting on paper, the confrontation of styles leans logically towards a style… à la Radiohead, like the haunting entry announcement The Same, even if Tom Skinner manages to win a few rounds on The Opposite and especially Pana-vision, probably the most archetypal track on the record, with the superposition of Yorkian humming on the strings of the London Contemporary and the percussive rhythms of Skinner. Everything comes together and everything is twisted in a happy medium. Other good moments include The Smoke, with a nice perf from Yorke, We Don't Know What Tomorrow Brings with this rather cool new wave side, and then Waving a White Flag, which blurs space-time at the using Thom Yorke's Waldorf STVC synth. A collaboration not revolutionary but very productive. And for impatient fans, it's almost like a new album.
