This is the debut album from Suffolk born singer/songwriter Tom Baxter. Co-produced by Jon Kelly (Paul McCartney, Kate Bush) and recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios, the album sees Baxter perform his brand of contemporary adult pop which has earned him comparisons to Jeff Buckley and David Gray.

Honestly, just because a singer is earnest and from Britain, it does not necessarily mean he is "the new Coldplay/Keane/Travis." Let's drop that bone! Tom Baxter sounds thoroughly lovely and upbeat on this CD. His voice has a wonderful reedy timbre and resonance that reminded me more of Peter Gabriel, if we have to do the ceaseless comparisons, than anyone else. Mostly, tho, he has his own sound. The songs are joyful, romantic and honest. "My Declaration" is an affirmative documentation of a new beginning that rings so true it manages to avoid sounding soppy. "This Boy" is about the universality of failure and the ability we all have to overcome it. This is a consistent debut with nice accompanying piano, in particular. He is a rising star–definitely someone to watch.

Many have tried their hand at the grandiose mega-ballad, but few have made such a persuasive job of it as Tom Baxter manages on My Declaration, the opening track of his debut album.

It begins as a modest, sensitive little thing, Baxter singing it as though nursing not only a broken heart but also severe toothache. Then it turns into a huge, steamrolling chorus wrapped in keyboards, bass and drums and a deluge of strings.

It's a hard act to follow, though Baxter repeatedly demonstrates his knack for smartly constructed mainstream pop with sing-in-the-bath choruses, albeit with a tendency towards the glutinous. The new single, This Boy, is typical of his McCartney-ish leanings, though he lapses into mawkishness on The Moon and Me, while Don't Let Go commits the grotesque error of mimicking Hothouse Flowers.

Baxter is possibly a little old before his time.
