The three orchestral suites on this disc afford splendid examples of Telemann's seemingly inexhaustible invention in this sphere. The best-known of the suites is that in C major for three oboes, bassoon and strings. It's one of countless pieces that demonstrate Telemann's sympathy for and knowledge of the oboe. The movements are effectively contrasted with the composer juxtaposing for example a vigorous Bourree en trompette with a drowsy ''Sommeille'' whose somnolent quavers have almost hypnotic powers. Pinnock revels in scene-painting of this kind, just as he invariably hits upon effective tempos for the dances.
The Suite in D is much less often performed than the C major work and, as far as I know, has existed in only one other commercially recorded version (Archiv, 5/64), long since deleted. The scoring here is for a pair of oboes doubling the violin parts and two hunting horns. A less even piece, perhaps, than the other two suites, it nevertheless has a resonant overture in the customary French manner with a decided air of occasion, and an Ecossaise whose 'Scotch snaps' give it an engagingly authentic character. The horn soloists Andrew Clark and Gavin Edwards make a fine contribution with infectiously robust playing and a sound which scorches the string texture and highlights its ceremonial character.
Lastly, Pinnock has chosen a Suite in B flat, hitherto unrecorded on disc but unquestionably in Telemann's best manner. The scoring here is similar to that of the C major Suite and, as before, the oboe writing is idiomatic and unfailingly attractive. In this piece more than the other two, Telemann the eclectic is apparent, drawing fluently from France, Italy and central Europe. Paul Goodwin, Lorraine Wood and Sophia McKenna (oboes), with Alberto Grazzi (bassoon) make a pleasingly balanced quartet with only the occasional hint of tonal insecurity, and they are complemented by a first-rate string ensemble, as warm in sound as I can ever remember from this ensemble.
