The main item in this second volume of Shostakovich film music on Chandos is the popular Suite from The Gadfly, whose “Romance” became an instant hit as the theme from the British TV series Reilly: Ace of Spies (it was well known in Russia long before). This newcomer is certainly exciting and full of contrast and color, with a very dreamy “Romance” and a much brasher treatment of such extravert segments as the “Folk Festival” than we hear on Chailly’s suavely polished Decca recording (to cite the most noteworthy among the competition). The result is arguably more “Russian” in feel, though I wouldn’t give up the playing of the Concertgebouw for any amount of money.
Sweetening the deal is a premier recording of a nine-minute Suite from Volochayev Days (1937), whose second movement (“Japanese Attack”) incongruously prefigures the finale of the Sixth Symphony (absent images on the screen it’s difficult to know how well the music fits the situation). The Suite from The Golden Mountains, a Socialist Realist thriller about a labor dispute that furthered the cause of the worker’s revolution in pre-communist Russia, features a catchy waltz played on a Hawaiian guitar. It was the first suite that Shostakovich prepared from his own film music, and had its premiere as early as 1931. As noted above, the performance are vivid and very well played, the sonics excellent.
