I first saw Jay in person at a Michael Franks concert i'd paid to attend . I was underwhelmed . Looking back , it's clear to me that Mike's concert was not quite "jazz" enough for my loving . Don't get me wrong , i love Michael but let's face it , he's more Steely Dan than "jazz jazz" . Some time later , i bought this recording by Mr. Azzolina (at a bargain basement price) and was like "really" ? Jay is a wonderful jazz guitar player . Allmusic is correct , this session is very "tasty" . Looking at the musician listing upon buying the disc , i knew good things where before me.

CMP recording artist David Mann is on alto saxaphone throughout . Other than trumpet player Jeff Beal , i was unfamiliar with the other folks here at the time . No worries . Probably David's brother ? Ned Mann is everywhere on both acoustic and electric basses . He's superb (as are ALL the folks here) . A fella named Yves Gerard plays spectacular drums . Another gentleman , Ted Lo , provides subtle and discrete synths thoughout as well . Mr Beal is on just one song (on synths) . The sounds Jay gets from his core trio range from similar to John Abercrombie on song number six (with what sounds like Marc Johnson and Peter Erskine in support) , to a host of great , cleanly articulated modern jazz players . On song number three , Jay does absolutely THE BEST job of playing and singing his notes wordlesssly of any player i've ever heard . This is an excellent recording that contains so many styles (all executed fantastically) . Given half a chance , it'll grow on you like a savory mushroom . Initially overlooked by the jazz critics and myself , this is a marvelous recording for true jazz guitar fans . Multiple listens WILL reveal this true . – Hammer + Jazz
