First the caveats (and I am providing them for historical accuracy, so please do not take them as complaints.) Coltrane is only on half of the tracks (Four, Walkin' and So What). One of the tracks, So What, while technically a live performance was actually a canned performance that was broadcast from CBS-TV Studio 61, New York City on April 2, 1959. This was from a recently discovered video of a broadcast for a series titled The Robert Herridge Theater.

I am usually loathe to describe music when there are sound samples, and this is one of those cases. My opinion is only going to reflect my personal taste, which may be different from yours. I also approach music as a drummer, which would probably skew my opinions even more. I will say that I loved every track, with Bye Bye Blackbird and So What as personal favorites. Listen to the sound samples to determine if this album is something you would enjoy. If you are a Miles Davis fan, then I am betting you will.

For historical purposes, here is the who, when and where information for the tracks on this album:

Bye Bye Blackbird and It Never Entered My Mind were recorded from a live performance at New York's Cafe Bohemia on July 13, 1957. Miles on trumpet, Sonny Rollins on tenor, with a rhythm section comprised of Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Art Taylor on drums.

Four and Walkin' were from a live performance at the Cafe Bohemia on May 17, 1958. Miles is on trumpet, Coltrane on tenor, and the rhythm section - Bill Evans on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums.

So What, as mentioned above, was from a broadcast from CBS-TV Studio 61 in NYC on April 2, 1959. Personnel: Miles on both trumpet and flugelhorn, Coltrane playing both tenor and alto sax, Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums.

Milestones was recorded at The Pinède, Antibes, France on July 27, 1963. Personnel for this live recording were: Miles on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums.

While Coltrane is only on three of the tracks, and the final track jumps out of the late 50s that the first five tracks are from, to 1963 when Miles had evolved away from the styles on the first five tracks, this album is still historically significant. For one thing, the April 1959 broadcast is in the same timeframe that Kind of Blue was being recorded, and foreshadowed that significant album's August release. The Cafe Bohemia performances were somewhat typical of what Miles was doing in that period, so having live tracks adds to the value of this album in my opinion.
