Song Review by Dave Thompson

With the departure of band co-founder Patrick Humphries,Andy McCluskey would now have to navigate the musical seas alone. Maybe that's why OMD's first new 45 since the split is so steeped in nostalgia, as the bandmembers sail giddily through the musical past, exuberantly reliving long-gone halcyon days – their own and those of sundry other folks as well. The rhythm, for starters, immediately brings to mind fellow futurists Depeche Mode's "Master and Servant." But within a few bars one realizes it's not so much an industrial crash as a stomp, a big platform-booted stamping and a glammy pounding that is custom-made for crazee people with tiger feet. And then there's the keyboard, a checkerboarded affair with a very Specials-ized sound that soon turns to pure Madness, before rolling off into the music hall. It's a glorious musical mélange, an inspired melding of synth pop soar, 2-Tone yore, and glam rock roar, the anthemic chorus to the fore with a fist-in-the-air punch that shouts out for more. But then McCluskey gives it a lyrical twist and, with a nod to "Sister Ray," he turns a love song into an epic journey, a chase around the seas that ends in awe and exhaustion. And by the time listeners have stomped around the world with him, they'll be ready for a cruise ship to take them home. OMD as you've never envisioned them, "Sailing on the Seven Seas" rowed straight up the British chart in the spring of 1991, landing at number three, the band's biggest hit to date. allmusicguide
