Heavy Metal | Karthago Records #KR091-HMC027

Great German 80s Heavy Metal for the first time mastered from the real sources with Bonustracks. Limited Edition to 666 copies. A typical great Karthago Classic!
In the beginning

It all began in a small town in the outskirts of Frankfurt (Main). Gerrit and Holger grew up in the same neighborhood and at the age of 15 / 16 decided to form a band and make music. We started by playing rock'n'roll standards, and simple songs by AC/DC, Kiss etc., using dirt cheap instruments we bought from our pocket money, and little jobs.

Jesche and Gerrit met at a party in the local castle dungeon, Holger heard Stephan shouting along to Van Halen and Deep Purple at a school party, and Markus was a well known drummer at our local school. The original Crack Jaw line up was complete.

Chapter 1

In 1982 our first gig was due and we needed a catchy name; Markus found "Crack Jaw" in the dictionary. It sounded cool, it looked even better and we did not care about the meaning. We started to gain some local recognition by playing youth centers, small festivals, and essentially any gig where people would allow us to perform.

Thru a public add we learned about a sampler for local bands called "rockactive one", and landed our song "Breaking The Oath" on it. In late 1983 we had saved enough money to record a 'proper' demo tape which included Helluva Sound, Never Tell No Lie, New Tomorrow and Galley Without Aim.

Promotion, booking and management were handled by Jesche and Doris

Early 1984 we participated at a competition for local bands in Frankfurt and we met Dietmar Wagner (editor of Metal Hammer) . He established the contact with the record company SPV. We signed a 3 album record deal in early summer 1984. After the recording (August 1984) and release (early 1985) of "Nightout", we went to promote the album but without an opportunity to do proper touring; The mandatory military service that some of us had to complete, limited our ability to play.

Chapter 2

The songs for the second album came to life. A demo tape was recorded and mixed in two days at Hotline Studio in Frankfurt. Much to our surprise, the songs did not meet our record company's expectation and the production of the 2nd album was stalled.

Around the same time, Holger had made up his mind to move away and follow a different career path. Then suddenly Markus also decided to leave and follow his dream and move to Canada. Markus was replaced by Frank Zumbroich, drummer of the befriended band "Overdose", and the lead guitar was taken by local virtuoso René Orfanidis.

Eventually SPV came listen to meet the new members and to listen "life" to the new material and now they liked the songs from the demo. SPV proposed to accelerate a second release by putting out an EP as an extension of the contract and to do a tour - at our own expense. Strange conditions, the advice of our recently hired manager and a good deal of attitude on our part eventually resulted in us parting ways with SPV. We probably could have done better, but we were young …

Despite the setback we continued to play. When René left the band, Bernd Vestweber - also ex Overdose - replaced him. Jesche and Doris had taken back the management and we were playing as much as we could – including a 10 days / 10 cities tour through Southern Germany.

The End

In spite of excellent feedback and a growing fan base we did not manage to get a new record deal. Stephan decided to leave Crack Jaw. His voice and his live show had been the hallmark of the band, so we decided to give up the old band name.

The back line of the band continued as "Skin Deep", with a new singer and new songs.

Gerrit left the band in 1990, and Jesche, as the last member of the original line up, parted ways with the band after a short stint as their manager. Skin Deep ceased to exist shortly thereafter.

Epilog

The members of the Nightout line up kept loose contact over the years. We first met again to make music in December 2012. Late 2013 we got a call from Stefan Riermaier of PureSteel Records. The result of this call is in your hands right now – 30 years after the re-release of "Nightout": A re-release of “Nightout” plus some bonus-material.

Songs

Nightout (Making of)

Most of the songs for the album were ready when we signed with SPV. We reviewed the material with producer Wolfgang Eichholz.

The album was recorded during 2 weeks at CAET studios in Berlin. Jesche, Markus and Gerrit went first to record the basic tracks, Holger "flew in" for the weekend from military service to record his guitar parts and keyboards. Lastly a very ill, flu stricken Stephan arrived but delivered his trademark vocals despite throat pain. Thereafter we left the mix to producer and engineer. When we heard the result we were shocked. This was not our sound and a number of fills and takes were left out. So Jesche flew back to Berlin to remix the album with Wolfgang at Recordland Studios.

When you listen to the Vinyl and compare it to the later CD release, you will hear the earlier non approved mix on the CD. This re-release is based on the Vinyl version.

Bonus Tracks

For our 2012 and 2013 jam sessions, we had rented a rehearsal room at the Music Academy in Frankfurt. In June 2014 we spent 2 days recording 2 songs at the same place. The last song is our very first song being released on vinyl.

Nightout was digital remasterded in this version by Rob Rettberg in L.A., a very good friend of Markus from old Canada times.

As a premium, our old live mixer Jürgen Lusky has mixed & mastered this rerelease album.

Crack Jaw - Nightout (1985) {2015, Limited Edition, Reissue, Remastered}

Finally, this masterpiece of classic mid-80's German heavy metal has received the reissue treatment it deserved. Crack Jaw - Nightout is a truly unique album blending the best elements of Euro-metal with very high-end production melodic AOR stylizations. Recorded in 1984 and released in early 1985 on Steamhammer-SPV, from the first track it's apparent that CRACK JAW were a hugely talented band with a very unique and quite cutting-edge sound. The opening track "The Change" blends elements of TRANCE or GRAVESTONE-styled proto-metal with a dark and melodic edge similar to NWOBHM like STAMPEDE, early HEAVY PETTIN', "The Cage"-era TYGERS OF PAN TANG, DIAMOND HEAD's "Canterbury", QUARTZ's-"Against All Odds" LP or even Canadian legends SANTERS' "Racing Time" masterpiece. "The Change" immediately sets the mood for the whole album and stands as a brilliant opening song. Track two, the title track "Nightout", is masterwork of full on super catchy, melodic, speed-picked German metal in the style which later German bands like SCANNER, early BLIND GUARDIAN would make famous. One of my favorite title-tracks of any heavy metal album. Track three is a super-melodic, yet very powerful tune called "Make Me Believe". A perfect blend of hooks and highly stylized 80's metal. The next tune is burned into my brain as the song which (I remember it like it was yesterday) made me look up the first time I ever heard this album and say, "these guys aren't just good…they're freakin' amazing"! The song is called "New Tomorrow" and epitomizes everything that made CRACK JAW so special. With its hyper-catchy songwriting, super-tight melodic power metal guitar construction and up-tempo driving rhythm, the song is a true masterwork. It sounds as cutting-edge today as it did in '85. In fact, many of today's retro-European power metal bands bear a striking resemblance to CRACK JAW, further reinforcing the notion that these guys were onto something very special pretty early in the game. The fifth track (and final song on Side 1 of the LP) is a punchy, attitude-laden tune called "Never Tell No Lies". Once again this sounds like a tune one would hear years later by a band like GAMMA RAY. CRACK JAW are a band that were all about tight songwriting, melody, mood, hooks, and execution. And underlying this whole album is a mood which can best be described by viewing the album cover. The album cover really does a great job in capturing the essence and color of CRACK JAW's musical palette. All night lights and neon….
Side 2 of the album (track 6) starts with a superb, moody twin guitar instrumental soundscape buildup called "Saracen", which leads directly into the excellent very Euro-metal track "Danger". On of the best tunes on the album, "Danger" conjures up an almost Swedish vibe (one can hear bits of TORCH, OVERDRIVE, AXEWITCH, HEAVY LOAD, etc.) in the riffage and excellent dual guitar work. The chorus is supremely catchy yet not obnoxious as the song maintains its mood of strange menace. Just when you think it can't get any better the next tune "Galley Without Aim" arrives. One of the heaviest tunes on the record it features simply wicked leads and a driving beat. The track also features a spaced out melodic middle-section which precedes a wicked solo-segment for the ages. This tune reminds me of something that you may have heard on a post-"Under Jolly Roger" RUNNING WILD album. "Struck By Thunder" is a headbanging affair, all twin-leads on top of a super tight up-tempo rhythm section. The playing is simply astounding. Easily superior to anything HELLOWEEN were doing circa '84-'85. "Struck By Thunder" is German power metal at its finest, simple as that. The album ends with the only song to break the 4 minute mark, the 6 minute mini-epic "Seven Days Of Wonder". The perfect song to end this amazing album on, it sums up all that has came before it and is a stark demonstration of the CRACK JAW sound. There are moments in this tune that seriously wouldn't sound at all out of place on BLIND GUARDIAN's "Tales From The Twilight World" or "Somewhere Far Beyond" albums. It is six minutes of near pure perfection where sheer innovative nature and creative guitar structures abound. If one were to do a history of "power metal" (a vague term which admittedly I've never liked, however, I'll use it for lack of a better term), "Seven Days Of Wonder" would be a must-include track. Why, well most importantly when listening to "Nightout" one has to remember this was recorded in 1984! Yet the production and product are of such an astoundingly unique and high quality it's hard to believe. Tragically, as with so many visionary albums which can be described as "ahead of their time" (or in the case of CRACK JAW, "very much of its time BUT paving the way forward into the future"), "Nightout" (despite excellent reviews and decent distribution) just didn't receive the commercial success which it should have. There are many reasons for this. For one, '84-'85 were years which saw the explosion of the thrash/speed metal scene in Germany. From Sodom to Destruction, Kreator to Assassin, the German scene was inundated with thrash due in part to the rise of Noise Records, but also simply the shift in the international underground metal scene towards all things extreme. Now certainly CRACK JAW were extreme…extremely awesome. However, they were not a thrash band (although one can find much speed picking and technical guitar styling which some thrash bands like Target, Living Death, Rage, etc. would employ). CRACK JAW were in many ways a band that lived in a bit of a world of their own. Employing such a penchant for melodic perfection and no-filler songwriting coupled with an ethos of exact execution (these guys could really play and I believe Stephan Kiegerl is one of the greatest vocalists in German heavy metal history) and a production style which is simply jaw-dropping (cheers to Wolfgang Eichholz and the band for such a stellar sounding record) is what has allowed "Nightout" to remain so fresh sounding and vital, a full 30 years after its release. So if you are a fan of melodic European heavy metal from the 80's with an emphasis on hooks and songwriting as well as killer guitarwork and great vocals, or if you are interested in the development of German "power metal", then CRACK JAW-"Nightout" is a must have album. It is an album which listen after listen never fails to disappoint. It is an example of melodic heavy metal at its best and stands as one of the greatest examples of the art form. A true masterpiece…
