72 Meters (Russian: 72 метра) is a 2004 Russian drama film directed by Vladimir Khotinenko based on the short stories from the collection of stories of the same name by Alexander Pokrovsky. Soundtrack was written by Ennio Morricone.
Morricone's Symphony '72 Meters' is one of those rare finds - a score that can substitute and be performed as absolute music in a vast concert hall. It reminds me of Stravinsky's "Firebird' or Prokofiev's 'Romeo & Juliet' - music that can be performed with a visual presentation (ballet, anyone?) or alone on its own accord. The recording itself is pristine. Morricone's writing is first rate. At times there's a nod to the romantic masters (Bruckner, Rachmaninov, & Tchaikovsky). In others he channels his contemporaries (John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Hans Zimmer). it's interesting to note, for those familiar with his 'spaghetti westerns', this symphony does not echo those at all. They stand solely on their own as wholly original contemporary performance pieces. And for those who collect purely orchestral classical/film scores '72 Meters' is no disappointment.Review by Robin Ray, Amazon.com
