Florist - Jellywish (2025)

Brooklyn-based indie-folk quartet Florist gets lost in the small details of life, finding revelation in the pure joy of simple reverberating sounds and gently sung words on Jellywish. This is heartbreakingly smart minimalist folk, greatly rewarded by repeated listens. Fans of Carissa's Wierd, Palace Music, Shana Cleveland, the sorely-missed Geneviève Castrée, or any of the artists on the Orindal label will find much to love on this beguiling record.

You can't be allergic to twee if you dive into these waters. After all, the group self-describes as "a friendship project from the Catskill Mountains," and they sing on "Have Heaven" of "a fragment of colors coming from the baby's eyes." This is not faux naivete at play here though. These waters run remarkably deep, as on the lovely "Started to Glow," which begins "I'm thinking of dying again/ The only thing that visits my head now." It sounds so soft at first, with subtly accompanied acoustic guitar strums and lightly sung vocals, intoxicating and double-tracked and sweet.

Singer, guitarist, and principal songwriter Emily Sprague is joined here by accompanists Rick Spataro, Felix Walworth, and Jonnie Baker. Jellywish is low-key mournful throughout, and the palette might at first recall, say, Neil Young's Tonight's the Night, but it's also angelic and light— the icing on the cupcake made into song. The lyrics are both magical and boring, recalling the work of celebrated poets such as Joe Brainard or Eileen Myles. It's difficult to not quote entire songs. Sure, there are textbook bummerisms delivered earnestly, like "Jellyfish" which unloads the line "nothing is guaranteed but death," but only after intoning "Some things don't make any sense/ Like the jellyfish." If that's not absolutely perfect, what is?
