The Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band Vol. 1 is the 1975 album by the late Philip Pahinui, known more famously as Gabby Pahinui or "Pops". Released on the Hawaiian label PaninI Records, it was also released by Warner Bros. due to Ry Cooder being a part of the album. All of the songs received a lot of airplay in its day but the most famous song on here is the beautiful "Moonlight Lady", sung by Gabby's son, Bla Pahinui. This CD was released 1991, remastered by Lee Herschberg.
One of the classic Hawaiian albums, and possibly the point where island consciousness and music first touched a wider audience, this was first released in 1975, and its return on CD is very welcome. It's not perfect – the heavy lacing of strings on "Pu'uanahulu" and on the sentimental "Moonlight Lady" are things of their period which really haven't stood the test of time – but it's about as close as the '70s produced, with some glorious singing from almost everyone concerned and some brilliant guitar work, especially from Gabby on "Moanl Ke'ala," where his Hawaiian steel rings above the song like bells. Recorded in 1974 in an isolated part of North Kona, this offers the real Hawaii, beyond the tourist areas, and the legacy of guitar music that was a century and a half old. Having Ry Cooder as a guest certainly helped it receive slightly wider notice at the time (and at almost every moment since its release, too), although he plays just a peripheral role. The emphasis is on Gabby Pahinui and his band and on the interplay of voices and guitars – in addition to his sons, Pahinui's band included two world-class slack key players, Sonny Chillingworth and Leland Isaacs. The music is best when they steer away from the overly sentimental material, which can sometimes confuse – "Hawaiian Love" sounds as if it's going to be maudlin, but resolves as a glorious instrumental, while on the other hand the upbeat "Wahini U'l" gets bogged down with unnecessary strings that detract from its innate loveliness. The wonderful "Oli Komo" chant, with its log drums, returns everything to basics before the album closes with "Ipo Lei Manu," as laid-back and restful as a Hawaiian sunset. Even though not everything is perfect, it's a wonderful document of its time, and shows a great talent like Pahinui at the top of his form.

ORIGINAL LINER NOTES:
This album was recorded at a very serene and remote group of houses in the North Kona district on the Island of Hawaii. Between August 31st and September 11, 1974, seventeen people and 10,000 pounds of equipment remained at the location, isolated from any outside distraction. Musicians, producers and recording engineers worked in an inspirational setting, free to devote their total energy towards the 20 songs that were recorded.

Due to the lack of electricity at the location, generators were brought from Honolulu to supply the power required by the 16-track recording equipment. The recording was superbly engineered by Wally Heider Recording's top remote crew, who flew from Los Angeles with equipment to tape these unique sessions. The pahoehoe lava walls of the main living room provuded excellent acoustics and a natural recording environment for both engineers and imusicians.

Gabby's band included his songs Bla and Cyril, Atta Issacs, Sonny Chillingworth, Manuel "Joe Gang" Kupahu, Randy Lorenzo, and also the highly respected instrumentalist Ry Cooder. While in Honolulu for a concert date in April 1974, Ry and Gabby had a chance to play together in Waimanalo and as a gesture of appreciation for the Pahinui sound, Ry agreed to join the band for their recording sessions.

This album reveals previously unapproached standards of musicianship and recording technique in the field of Hawaiian music. Above all, however, is the feeling that is communication through the music; it is our sincert hope that this feeling is positive and uplifting.

EXTRA LINER NOTE FROM WARNER BROS. PRESSING:
This album is dedicated to the Hawaiian people. The music of Gabby Pahinui is their music, and it is as beautiful as the land from which it comes. It is a privilege to make this recording available in other lands and to other people.
