Johnny Mathis - Love Is Everything (1965) & Broadway (1964) [2012, Remastered Reissue]

"Love Is Everything", Johnny's masterful 1965 album of ballads, is finally out on CD is exciting enough, but on top of that Real Gone Music included his unreleased album of songs taken from Broadway musicals! "Love Is Everything" reunited Mathis with frequent Columbia collaborator Glenn Osser, while only a couple of tracks have ever seen release in any format from the "Broadway" album, which was recorded during 1964 and 1965.

~Love Is Everything (1965)~

"Love Is Everything" is the 22nd original studio album released by Johnny Mathis. It was his 6th album for Mercury Records. After the experimentation with his masterful last album "Olé", "Mathis" returned to more familiar musical ground with this album a solid collection of ballads originating from Broadway, films and the great American songbook. As was generally the case with his albums at this time, some less well-known material was included. The album was under the musical direction of Glenn Osser who had scored a number of the singer's albums for Columbia Records. This was their first album collaboration for Mercury Records. While his previous album failed to chart, this album found Mathis back on track with a peak position on the Billboard album chart of #52. This is his 26th album to place on the chart. As with many of his previous albums, Mathis looked to Broadway and Hollywood for musical inspiration on this album. The 1964 show "Funny Girl" helped to propel Barbra Streisand to superstardom. From its score he included "People", a song that would become one of Streisand's signature tunes. "Dancing in the Dark" was first heard in the 1931 review "The Band Wagon", though today it is remembered as underscoring one of the finest on screen dances by Fred Astaire and Cyd Charisse in the 1953 film of the same name. Hollywood also provided "Never Let Me Go" from the 1953 film of the same name and "Long Ago (And Far Away)"from 1944's "Cover Girl" which starred Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly. The song, with music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Ira Gershwin, has gone on to become a standard. "This Is All I Ask" is the work of arranger/conductor Gordon Jenkins. Originally written for Nat King Cole it is best remembered by the version recorded by Frank Sinatra in the same year as the Mathis version for the album "September of My Years". "Go Away Little Girl" is the work of Gerry Goffin and Carole King and was a 1962 hit for Steve Lawrence.

~Broadway (1964)~

"Broadway" is an album that was recorded in 1964 but not released by his then record label Mercury Records. The project first became commercially available on August 28, 2012, when Sony Music Entertainment released it as one of two albums on one compact disc, the other album being his 1965 LP "Love Is Everything". "Broadway" was also included in Sony's Mathis box set The Complete Global Albums Collection, which was released on November 17, 2014. After recording 16 studio albums for Columbia Records between 1956 and 1963, Mathis accepted an offer to switch to the Mercury label with one advantage being that he would have more control over his recordings. During the first 15 months at his new home, he recorded and released five LPs and began work on number six, which would be exclusively devoted to songs from musicals from the Great White Way or, as he described it, "things I was listening to because I was in New York. I would go to the theater a lot and listen to all that great music from different shows." The first four of his Mercury titles had respectable chart runs in Billboard, but the most recent of them, "Olé" was the first not to make the magazine's list of (what was now) the top 150 albums of the week since his 1956 Columbia debut. In the liner notes for the 2012 release of "Broadway", James Ritz describes how "John swings unabashedly and unrelentingly thanks to Allyn Ferguson, who outdid himself with a set of wild and uninhibited arrangements." Mathis has fond memories of the arranger/conductor: "Great stuff... lots of interesting rhythm patterns from Allyn. He was a taskmaster. He was very, very smart and he always put that into his music. He was very esoteric as far as his jazz was concerned. I just sort of tagged along. I enjoyed the challenge and vocally I think it worked. I was quite enamored at the time with Lena Horne and I think a lot of it reflects that."
Johnny Mathis - Love Is Everything (1965) & Broadway (1964) [2012, Remastered Reissue]

This reissue from Real Gone Music features a pair of LPs by vocalist Johnny Mathis, Love Is Everything from 1965 and the previously unreleased Broadway, which was originally scheduled for release on Mercury in 1964, but was scrapped. At the time, Mercury felt the album was too upbeat and not the type of romantic material Mathis had been so successful with during his previous tenure with Columbia. Over the years a few tracks have shown up on various compilations, but this release marks the first time the album has been heard in full. The following year Mathis returned to the romantic material best suited for him with Love Is Everything, which included such standards as "Young and Foolish," "Long Ago and Far Away," and "Dancing in the Dark."
