There was a two-year gap between the release of the s/t "Kiki Dee" album in 1977 and 1979's "Stay With Me". The latter however proved that Kiki had lost none of her unique and powerful vocal range, and featured nine songs that underlined the considerable experiences that she had gone through in the preceding six years. The title track, Stay With Me, penned by Jerry Ragavoy and George Weiss, had already been recorded by a number of other artists including The Walker Brothers, David Essex, Lorraine Ellison, and Nazareth's Dan McCafferty, but Kiki succeeded in placing her own distinguished vocal hallmark on the song, virtually making it her own. Once again Kiki contributed to some of the songs on the album, teaming up with David Lasley and Zane Busby to co-write "Talk To Me", "Don't Stop Loving Me" and "Dark Side Of Your Soul". Former Kiki Dee Band member and songwriter Bias Boshell collaborated with Davey Johnstone on "Love Is A Crazy Feeling". Additional material included Tom Snow and Glen Ballard's "One Step", "One Jump Ahead Of The Storm" which was penned by Troy Seals and Joe New, “You're Holding Me Too Tight” - a Cynthia Weil and Frannie Golde composition - and "Safe Harbor", co-written by David Lasley with Lana Marrano. "Stay With Me" was produced by the legendary Bill Schnee at Cherokee Recording Studios in Los Angeles, and featured a line-up of top West Coast session musicians including Jim Keltner, Steve Lukather, drummer Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (from the band Toto who went on to have massive hits in the early eighties such as Hold The Line, Africa and Rosanna) and some old friends like Davey Johnston and Bias Boshell, with the highly respected Brenda Russell helping out on backing vocals. The title track was released as a single in November 1978 and picked up radio airplay, without breaking into the Top 50 Two months later "One Jump Ahead Of The Storm" was also issued as a single, co-inciding with the release of the album itself. Both album and single brought down the curtain on Kiki’s enduring and successful relationship with Elton John’s Rocket records, albeit there were a couple of subsequent reissues of "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", and in 1993 Kiki teamed up once again with Elton for a new duet, "True Love", which revived the Cole Porter standard first performed by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly in the movie High Society The magic formula was obviously still there as the single sailed to number 2 in the U.K. charts. "Stay With Me" remains an outstanding album and one of which Kiki Dee can be justifiably proud. The eighties have since been described by Kiki as being "a pretty confusing time for me really” but no one can take away the fact that the seventies had been extremely kind to her, and that she finished the decade as one of Britain's best female rock and soul performers - and many would still agree today.
