TootArd, a five-piece from the contested Golan Heights region between Israel and Syria, are a unique proposition. Not officially citizens of either nation, the band - like everyone else who lives in the occupied territory - are officially stateless, hence naming this rather good debut album after the travel document issued to those who are officially "stateless" in lieu of a passport. The bands songs and instrumentals are similarly disconnected to any specific style, instead blending traditional Arabic and North African styles with West African takes on American funk and psychedelic rock. It's a brilliantly positive and hugely entertaining fusion that belies the band's testing circumstances.
