    "The Net" is the 7th studio album by Australian group, Little River Band. "The Net" was released in May 1983 and peaked at #11 on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart and #61 on the Billboard 200. "The Net" was their first full studio release to feature John Farnham as new lead vocalist, replacing Glenn Shorrock and Stephen Housden taking over as lead guitarist. It was also the last album featuring original member Beeb Birtles, who left the line-up after the US tour in support of its release, and drummer Derek Pellicci, who would rejoin the band in 1987.

    Little River Band - The Net (1983) [1986, Reissue]

    1983's The Net saw fellow Australian John Farnham replacing Glenn Shorrock on vocals on the first of three albums before Shorrock's return. The Net marked the group's last two Top 40 singles, the first with "We Two" hitting #22 and the second with "You're Driving Me out of My Mind," that peaked at #35 three months later. The latter was heightened by some exuberant horn induction that led to it's dashing, jazzy feel, while the former was more akin to the Little River Band's late-'70s/early-'80s sound. But even with these singles, The Net failed to capture the same success they experienced with Shorrock at the helm. The same type of soft rock fluidity and laid-back charm has been replaced with a sound that seems forced and somewhat strained on this album. The blame can't be put completely on Farnham, though, as the market seemed to be changing in the early part of the decade, slowly shying away from the lucid, relaxed feel of LRB's style of music ever so slightly. Actually, Farnham puts some inspired effort into his singing, witnessed on tracks like "Mr. Socialite" and "Down on the Border." Suffering from a pop formula that seems a little too contrived for LRB, this album, along with 1985's Playing to Win and '86's No Reins, are the band's weakest efforts.

    After Sleeper Catcher, this is the next album of substance from Little River Band. The Net saw John Farnham as the new vocalist, and on "We Two" he lets loose, coupled with an expansive arrangement that crescendos about six times, and by the end you feel like you've run the gauntlet of musical scales and hit every note along the way. "Falling" and "The Net" are also nice period pieces that fit into the album's overall theme and give it an authoritative touch. Little River Band is more diverse than they're recognized for, and The Net provides yet another flavor of that dynamic. LRB is great at harmonizing, and can also offer soft ballads and upbeat pop dreams. The songwriting is first class, the vocals are dead on, and backup instrumentation falls right in line where it needs to. All together, it forms a recipe for a wonderful array of songs. The Net is a further example of '70s styles carrying over into the early '80s without losing a step.
