A posthumous collection produced by Rita Marley, based on work left behind by Bob upon his death. Some of his best post-Wailers work is here, with songs like "Buffalo Soldier," "Chant Down Babylon," and "Blackman Redemption." Given that he wasn't alive to do the production that he usually helped in, this album seems remarkably true to the general vision of Bob Marley's albums…

Rickie Lee Jones released her auspicious self-titled debut album in 1979 and its equally impressive follow-up, Pirates, in 1981. By the spring of 1983, she apparently was not close to having a third full-length collection of all original songs ready, so Girl at Her Volcano appeared instead…

Twenty-five years of the Shadows had raced by in a blur of hits. Both in their own right, and as the backing band behind so many of Cliff Richard's greatest recordings, the Shadows had left such an indelible mark on the British rock landscape that kids who weren't even born before "Apache" couldn't help but wish them well on their birthday…

"Nobody's Diary" is a song recorded by British synthpop band Yazoo. It was released in May 1983 as the first and only single from their second and last album, You and Me Both. The song was written by Alison Moyet and produced by Yazoo, Eric Radcliffe and Daniel Miller. "Nobody's Diary" peaked at number three in the UK Singles Chart.
Yazoo, known in North America as Yaz, were a short-lived but quite successful '80s U.K. synth pop duo. Within a period of only 16 months, from March 1982 through July 1983, masterful synthesizer player Vince Clarke and powerhouse vocalist Alison Moyet left their mark with only two albums, Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both, and four hit singles including the stirring ballad "Only You" and club classic "Don't Go"…

Tommy is the fourth studio album by the English rock band The Who, a double album first released in May 1969. The album was mostly composed by guitarist Pete Townshend as a rock opera that tells the story about a deaf, dumb and blind boy, including his experiences with life and his relationship with his family. Townshend came up with the concept of Tommy after being introduced to the work of Meher Baba, and attempted to translate Baba's teachings into music. Recording on the album began in September 1968, but took six months to complete as material needed to be arranged and re-recorded in the studio. Tommy was acclaimed upon its release by critics, who hailed it as the Who's breakthrough.

From the state of New York came Preview, an admirably melodic AOR group that released only a single album full of catchy material before (mournfully and unjustifiably) disappearing off the scene prior to gaining any traction. Years later, however, a bootleg became available of the band’s unreleased second album, and although Preview seemed to have soldiered on (at least for a short time) in the same overall style on its second potential release, creating another decent record, the songwriting didn’t seem quite as immediate or the “polish” quite as sparkling. But then again, these tunes had not been finalized for an “official” release, therefore, although the potential certainly existed, who knows what the tunes may have sounded like in a professionally produced and mastered condition?

As digital technology began to prevail in the recording industry in the early '80s, Elton John's original record producer, Gus Dudgeon, was among the first to actively embrace the seemingly infinite possibilities in the medium. Although the promise of perfect sound may have been a bit of an exaggeration, the notable improvements to the subtleties as well as the expanded frequency response of recordings remastered in the digital domain were most certainly not. Dudgeon's original idea for this 11-track compilation was to not only present some of John's best-known works in this new realm, but also a few of the deeper album cuts that would most aptly demonstrate the awesome dimensions inherent in digital audio reproduction…

Unlike his Delmark sets, almost everything on this set (first issued in France on Black & Blue) is a cover (only the observant "Heap See" boasts original lyrics). Still, this album stands as the Chicago guitarist's most satisfying and consistent album, as he deals out gorgeous, shimmering versions of "Little by Little, " "Cold, Cold Feeling, " and "You Don't Know What Love Is" tailored to his soaring vocals and twisting guitar riffs (ominous minor keys often play a role in his rearrangements).

Neither a career retrospective nor a rarities collection, Time Pieces, Vol. 2: Live in the '70s is an odd record. Featuring a selection of material recorded in concert at various points in the '70s, the album never gives an accurate impression of Clapton's progression as a guitarist – it's sequenced haphazardly, with tracks falling outside of strict chronological order…

Faithfull pegged her comeback to a brutal survivalist persona, but by this fourth album of her second career, she had mellowed at least to the extent of constructing flowing song structures with her collaborators, Barry Reynolds and Wally Badarou, that eased the bitterness still found in many of her lyrics…

Elton John began inching back into the mainstream with Jump Up, an uneven but strong record highlighted by "Empty Garden." Its success set the stage for Too Low for Zero, a full-fledged reunion with his best collaborator, Bernie Taupin, and his classic touring band. Happily, this is a reunion that works like gangbusters, capturing everybody at a near-peak of their form…
