An acclaimed Italian guitar virtuoso and composer, Mauro Giuliani, along with Fernando Sor, was one of the last great classical proponents of his instrument until its revival in the early twentieth century. He studied counterpoint and the cello, but on the six-string guitar he was entirely self-taught, and that became his principal instrument early on. Italy abounded with fine guitarists at the beginning of the nineteenth century (Carulli remains the most familiar today), but few of them could make a living because of the public's preoccupation with opera. So Giuliani embarked on a successful tour of Europe when he was 19, and in 1806 he settled in Vienna, where he entered the musical circle of Diabelli, Moscheles, and Hummel. He solidified his reputation with the 1808 premiere of his Guitar Concerto in A major, Op. 30, and was soon heralded as the greatest living guitar virtuoso. Even Beethoven noticed Giuliani, and wrote of his admiration for him. Perhaps to return the favor, Giuliani played cello in the 1813 premiere of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.

Around 1814, Giuliani was named virtuoso onorario di camera to Napoleon's second wife, Empress Marie-Louise. But, deeply in debt, he returned to Italy in 1819. An 1823 trip to London brought him acclaim in the English-speaking world, and resulted in a short-lived fan publication called The Giulianiad. After this visit, the guitarist settled in Naples, enjoying the patronage of the court of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies. He became adept on an obscure instrument called the lyre-guitar (which was marketed mainly to female amateurs), and perfected the design of the "ghitarra di terza," an instrument with a shorter fingerboard than that of the regular "Spanish" guitar.

Giuliani published more than 200 works; his most durable pieces include three lyrical concertos in a late Classical/early Romantic style, and, for solo guitar, the Grand Overture, Op. 61, and a series of six sometimes long-winded suites, Le Rossiniane, based on tunes by Gioacchino Rossini. As a special help to other players, Giuliani notated his works on the treble clef in an innovative manner, with the rests and note-stem directions distinguishing the melody from the bass line and inner voices.

James Reel, Allmusic.com

About a dozen years ago, the editor asked each of the magazine's reviewers to come up with a list of 10 favorite recordings, "Desert Island Recordings." I was a little reluctant at the time to find ten among hundreds of favorites. Today, were I to make up such a list I would undoubtedly include Giuliani's First Guitar Concerto, a recording previously available only on a full-priced Philips disc, coupled with the Third Concerto. Now, for the same price, we get all three of Giuliani's guitar concertos plus over half a dozen other of his guitar works on a pair of discs in Philips' increasingly impressive Duo series. I can't begin to tell you how enjoyable this set is.

The First Concerto, premiered in 1808, was a popular favorite in its time and deserves its popularity to this day. It was to the 19th century what Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez has become to the 20th century in terms of public acceptance. One could not ask for a lighter, happier, sunnier, sweeter, more charming piece of music, seductively performed by a master of the guitar, Pepe Romero, and accompanied by the ever-reliable Neville Marriner and his Academy. The Second Concerto is darker in tone, and not nearly so much fun, but worth one's listen because it's still better than almost anything else composed for the guitar. By the Third Concerto in 1820, Giuliani had become, for better or worse, far more sophisticated in his composition and arrangement; the Third Concerto's main attractions are its enchantingly beautiful slow movement and its brilliant finale. Closer to the stylistic simplicity of the First Concerto, however, is Giuliani's three-movement Introduction, Theme with Variations, and Polonaise, a thoroughly enchanting piece that comes close to challenging the First Concerto for all-out charisma. Also included on the discs are the Gran Sonata Eroica, Grande Ouverture, La Melanconia, Handel Variations, and Variazioni concertanti. It is a pleasurable mix.

Originally issued on three full-priced LPs, this collection was recorded between 1974 and 1978. The sound is typical of Philips' late analogue work, not analytically dear but well focused, warm, and smooth. The guitar is prominently displayed but not too far forward. On the whole, I can't think of a better way to while away a little over two and a half hours than with these discs. Okay, I can think of maybe one. But buy this set anyway.

Review by John Puccio, Sensible Sound

Giuliani sure must have studied Mozart because, if you like Mozart (and who doesn't), you will like Giuliani. These CDs are a good bargain and a pleasant introduction to the music of Mauro Giuliani. The recording is relatively old (1975-1978 ADD), but the performances are fine (Pepe Romero in my mind is the best in the world today) and so is the sound.

A fine addition to anyone's classical CD collection.
