Sharon Isbin Described by the Boston Globe's Michael Manning as a musician who plays "beyond virtuosity," guitarist Sharon Isbin has been a consistent challenge for critics, who struggle to find the right superlative that would do justice to her exquisite playing. A Renaissance woman of the guitar, Isbin performs worldwide at famous venues, commissions new works from distinguished American composers (more than any other guitarist) for her instruments, collaborates with a wide variety of musicians, and indefatigably searches for new music to play.Isbin was born on August 7, 1956, in Minneapolis. As a child, she wanted to be a scientist, like her father.

Austrian guitarist Rosa Franziska Maier – laureate of numerous international competitions – releases an imaginative musical collage with GENUIN, comprising works spanning three centuries. Centered around William Walton’s "Five Bagatelles" are compositions by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Johann Sebastian Bach, Giulio Regondi, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Isaac Albéniz. In Maier’s richly colored and precisely articulated guitar sound, these works evoke a wide range of luminous moods, forming an imaginary museum bathed in the light of a Mediterranean summer evening.

Bach Eskelinen includes works by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), arranged for the guitar and performed by Ismo Eskelinen. The first versions of the items on this disc were dance suites composed for stringed instruments. There is also a separate movement that is in fact comparable to a little suite in length. Music by Johann Sebastian Bach has been performed on the guitar at least since the 19th century. A number of guitarists play works for solo violin or cello, and many have transcribed ones originally scored for keyboard. Works by Bach for lute have been in the guitar repertoire since about the middle of last century, thought some were probably intended for another instrument.

The fluidity of his playing on this album is amazing. Each note falls in place at exactly the right moment. Besides the well-known J.S. Bach, he also introduces us to several other less-known Baroque composers: Gaspar Sanz, Fernando Sor, S.L. Weiss, & Robert de Visee. Too often, Baroque music is presented as just an exercise in counterpoint. In this album, the rhythm is matched to human emotions in such a way that it's not just an academic exercise. The music is both exhilarating and soothing.

The ultimate violin virtuoso, Niccolò Paganini also wrote more than 100 pieces for guitar, including these Ghiribizzi (‘whims’). Composed for ‘a little girl in Naples’ who must have been both talented and eager to develop her technique, these whimsical works explore a wide range of musical styles idiomatic to the guitar. Many of the 43 short movements draw on themes by Rossini, Paisiello, Süssmayr, Mozart, Giuliani and, of course, Paganini himself. Praised by Les cahiers de la guitare as ‘inspired’ and Koelner Stadt Anzeiger as a ‘genius’, Denis Sungho Janssens made his 2005 Carnegie Hall début as a Rising Star of the European Concert Hall Organization.

Heitor Villa-Lobos was one of the least prolific composers of guitar music in the early 20th century, with only 24 pieces published during his lifetime, including Chôro No. 1, Suite Populaire Brésilienne, Cinq Préludes, and Douze Études. It is remarkable that despite his vast catalogue of composition and his affinity for the guitar, he has produced relatively few works for the instrument. Nonetheless, Villa-Lobos gained prominence in concert and recording programs starting in the 1960s due to the high musical quality of his works and his deep connection to the instrument. His relationship with the guitar has often been compared to that of Chopin with the piano; highlighting his natural and joyful style, though different in musical language.
