2008 album from the world famous tenor, based upon poems by the late Pope John Paul II. The album is performed with the London Symphony Orchestra and features duets with Andrea Bocelli, Vanessa Williams and Katherine Jenkins. The lyrics are in Italian, English and Spanish. Placido is known for his versatile and strong voice, possessing a ringing and dramatic tone throughout its range. He is considered to be a talented and hard-working musician but is also admired for his acting ability, his musicality and musical intellect, and the number and variety of opera roles that he has mastered.
One of the most beloved spiritual leaders of the modern era, Pope John Paul II was not only a humanitarian and theologian, but an artist and author. In his pre-Papal life as Karol Wojtyła, the holy man wrote plays, essays, and, most notably, poetry. Considering that John Paul II was known as the “people’s Pope,” it makes sense that his work should be interpreted by another figure with populist leanings, the great tenor Placido Domingo, who consistently brought classical music to non-traditional audiences. As such, much of the music here is of a very accessible nature. “La Tua Semplicita” is a duet that employs a sweeping, cinematic orchestral arrangement, while the gentle, Domingo-composed “Gratitude” pairs the opera great with R&B crooner Vanessa Williams and features Irish penny whistle. This beautiful album presents the poetry of John Paul interpreted by great tenor Placido Domingo and the London Symphony Orchestra in music and voice. These songs bring back the memory of the late Polish pontiff and his Infinite Love (Amor Eterno) for God and the world. The songs centered on the world of manual labor, young love, war, nature and family relations inspired by the Infinite Love (Amor Eterno) of God. Some of the songs are presented in Italian while other in Spanish and English. Some of the songs provide collaborations with great musicians such as Placido Domingo Jr (Love), Josh Groban (La Tua Semplicita), Andrea Bocelli (Canto del Sole Inesauribile), Vanessa Williams (Gratitude), Katherine Jenkins(A Mother's Wonderment). All of them did a wonderful job along with Placido Domingo and the London Symphony Orchestra.
