Ryan McGarvey - The Albums Collection (2007-2014) Re-Up

Absorbing influences from everything from early delta blues, to classic hard rock, to more contemporary blues/rock artist's of today. Ryan has gathered numerous accolades over the recent years. Most notably including in 2006 Ryan was named Guitar Center 's "Guitarmaggeddon: Next King Of The Blues" champion of New Mexico. In 2007 Ryan took home the New Mexico Music Award for "Blues Song Of The Year" for his song "Cryin' Over You". Ryan has featured by the editors of Guitar Player Magazine multiple times. Not including being featured in internationally placed advertisements for Ernie Ball/Music Man, and AUDIX Microphones, and more. McGarvey was voted "Best Musician" from Albuquerque The Magazine's Annual "Best Of The City" Readers Poll in 2008, 2010, and 2012 (being voted Best Vocalist in 2009). A life changing accomplishment occurred in 2010, when Ryan was personally by Eric Clapton from over 4000+ artists from around the world to perform at his Crossroads Guitar Festival in Chicago. From 2011-2012 Ryan & his Band embarked on multiple, extensive, and very successful European tours to rave reviews, and endless requests for returns. In 2013 Ryan received the prestigiuous award of "Best New Talent" in the notorious Guitar Player Magazine.With a solid rhythm section backing him, Ryan McGarvey and his band are embarking on bigger and better things every day…

Have you ever discovered a new talent comes along that knocks you flat on your keister, inspiring you to get right back up in hopes that you’ll get knocked right back down again? Guitar prodigy, Ryan McGarvey, is just such a talent.
What does he sound like? To say that he literally sounds as though he’s channeling Hendrix, Vaughn, Clapton and Page would not be an exaggeration in the least little bit.

Yeah, he’s THAT good! His 2007 debut album, Forward In Reverse, is chock full of all original, excellently composed tunes that will make many well established artists turn green with creative envy.

The first cut, Right In All The Wrong Ways, conjures up the illusion of a jam session between Cream, Aerosmith and ZZ Top. The driving blues number will stick in your cranium, creating one of the most enjoyable earworms you’ve ever experienced.
Joyride is a great tune to drive down the a desolate stretch of Interstate 40, say, between Albuquerque and Amarillo at dusk, with the convertible down and the speakers blasting. You’ll never want to stop.
The love song, The One That Got Away, will hook you from the git-go with its hypnotic rhythm and early 70’s aura. It is followed by the Stevie Ray Vaugh-esque, Watch Yourself and Texas Special, that will leave you convinced that Mr. Vaugh had, indeed, raised from the dead.
McGarvey’s unique song craft comes shining through in Someone Like You. This tune, while great in its own right, is unique in that it doesn’t seem to draw heavily from the 70’s influence. However, Second Time Around is a tune dripping heavily of Cream mixed with a little Jeff Beck.
Cryin’ Over You is blues as it should be played: clear, fluid, and raw with emotion. It doesn’t get any better than this. Followed by Mystic Dream is phenomenal. What else can I say? Well, in addition to being an excellently crafted instrumental, I would very good money that I would need to borrow from you to see this played live as a duet with Robin Trower.
Another song that begs to be played as a historic duet is Blue Eyed Angel Blues. Again, McGarvey can stand alone with this tune and still be called great. However, if I could ever watch Ryan perform this tune with Gary Moore, I would feel that I watched double greatness in action.

In 2007, Ryan McGarvey released his debut album, Forward In Reverse, which was recorded when he was only 19 years age. The album was as strong of a debut you can imagine from a young guitarist. Now 25, McGarvey is back with his highly anticipated sophomore album, Redefined. It’s a fitting title as McGarvey’s sound has evolved into more of a straight up rock style, though still blues based.

Redefined begins with “All The Little Things,” a nice rocker that does a good job of setting the tone for the album. The upbeat “Never Seem To Learn” and euphoric “My Sweet Angel” are next and if there was any justice they would receive airplay on mainstream rock radio. Other highlights include “Prove Myself,” a groovy jam that really puts McGarvey’s guitar mastery on display and “So Close To Heaven,” which should become a McGarvey staple for years to come.

Many young guitarists struggle to separate their sound from the rest of the pack, but McGarvey has come up with a signature sound that is distinctively his own. Redefined will go down as one of best albums of the year. Names like Bonamassa, Trucks, and Sayce are often mentioned as modern day guitar heroes, and it won’t be long until Ryan McGarvey enters the equation.

Ryan McGarvey has always gotten straight down to the fundamentals. His music is a very modern alternative, hailing high praise from critics and his rock idols alike. With strong vocals and a knack for the blues scales, the one man wrecking ball delivers another strong performance on The Road Chosen.

Ryan is able to offer many different sounds on the album, as he has done on albums past. From quick-tempered jams to acoustic ballads, he leaves no shade of his strat unearthed. The album draws us in with its opening track, “Memphis,” a heavy distortion slowly building until the bridge, then it’s off to the races for a signature solo. “Little Red Riding Hood” offers a soulful verse, leading into a fast-paced chorus riff. Ryan has a gift in his ability to be soulful, edgy and back to soulful again. His guitar speaks that very same language. The album does a good job of strapping you in to the rollercoaster of emotion Ryan emanates from track to track. One moment rocking out to his guitar pouring out heavy licks, flowing up and down the scale like Eric Johnson. The next you are hearing him pour his heart out in the trials and tribulations of romance. “Firework Eyes” embodies this ability to transition all in one track. Starting off slow and delicate, he hits you from out of left field with a rollicking riff right to the gut. His fast hands shine through on the soloing strewn throughout.

Ryan McGarvey is on the fast track to success. Already having played alongside the likes of Clapton and Bonamassa, he has garnered the praise and respect he truly deserves. This can only bode well for how the album is received.
