Know the three things which are necessary to a man in a house: a virtuous wife, a cushion on his chair, and a well-tuned harp": so runs a Welsh law of AD920. A thousand years later men in houses could probably be found, even in Wales, who would not select quite the same three primary necessities; yet Susan Drake certainly makes a good case for the inclusion of the harp. And one day electronic harps will obviate its one disadvantage: the necessity of the harpist always being the first on stage in order to secure a well-tuned one.

Such a one, needless to say, is used on this record, and indeed every possible quality there is in harp playing is displayed in the various pieces. Many of the older composers concerned were, as usual, harpists themselves. Zabel in particular was: at II he joined Gungl's band, touring Russia, England and the USA; at 14 he became solo harp in the Berlin Opera orchestra; at 21 solo harp with the Imperial Ballet in St Petersburg, where he stayed for the rest of his life. (Well, where was there a better place for a harpist of that calibre to move on to?)

Zabel's own music is represented here by a light Valse Caprice of the type he must often have played with Gungl; it fits well into the programme. Not all the harpist-composers are quite so light: the inescapable Parish Alvars is not, John Thomas is not. In between come the composers not themselves harpists: Glinka, unusually easy-going with a Nocturne, Pierne more expectedly easy-going with an Impromptu-caprice. Perhaps the most unexpected success is the Faure Impromptu (once a slip of the pen refers to it in the insert note as a Nocturne); and perhaps the most expected success is the Debussy Clair de lune which, when played on the piano, always sounds as if it should have been written for the harp in the first place!

Highly successful throughout are the playing and recording: both immaculate. Just once a gremlin decides to interfere with some string damping; but he is quickly warned off.
