This set collects two of the Chi-Lites' later-era LPs, 1976’s "Happy Being Lonely" and 1977’s "The Fantastic Chi-Lites", on a single disc. The group was pretty much past its sell-by date at this point and beset with frequent personnel changes, although both of these albums are surprisingly pleasant and poignant at points even if they didn’t yield any big hits.

This two-on-one CD features two rare albums by the much-loved vocal group, The Chi-Lites, recorded for Mercury Records in the mid- 70s. Based in Chicago, The Chi-Lites enjoyed a run of hits in the late '60s and early '70s for Brunswick Records that included classics like Oh Girl and Have You Seen Her? After lead producer/writer Eugene Record left the group to pursue a solo career, The Chi-Lites switched labels, moving to Mercury for August 1976 sessions produced by the group's Marshall Thompson which resulted in their debut album for the label, Happy Being Lonely. Among the musicians featured on Happy Being Lonely are members of the Earth, Wind & Fire horn section (Louis Satterfield and Donald Myrick), Chicago stalwart and album co-producer Tom-Tom Washington, famed saxman Willie Henderson and super-guitarist Phil Upchurch; and singer Barbara Acklin on background vocals. Key tracks on Happy Being Lonely include a version of The Spinners Games People Play, Vanishing Love (written by soul music hero Sam Dees), the title cut (penned by Motown writers Kathy Wakefield and Ken Hirsch) and the single Love Can Be Hazardous. The group expanded to a quintet featuring Thompson, Robert Squirrel Lester, David Scott, Vandy Hampton during its two-year tenure with Mercury Records journeyed to Philadelphia to record their second LP for the label, The Fantastic Chi-Lites. Recorded at famed Sigma Sound Studios, the album was produced by Richard Rome (whose credits included work with The O Jays, Jean Carn and The Three Degrees) and features four compositions by songwriter/producer Phil Hurtt (a member of Philly's Young Professionals producer/writer team). Musicians on the sessions include renowned Philly session guitarist Bobby Eli, with strings and horns conducted by Don Renaldo (of MFSB). Motown superstar Stevie Wonder is a special guest on the track, If I Had A Girl. Key tracks on The Fantastic Chi-Lites include a cover of Natalie Cole's I've Got Love On My Mind and the single, My First Mistake. Notes by Chris Rizik, founder of the popular website, Soul Tracks include an interview with The Chi-Lites' Marshall Thompson. Happy Being Lonely and The Fantastic Chi-Lites have only been available on Japanese CDs now out of print.
