Texas Blues, Rhythm & Blues | Label: One Day Music | # DAY2CD241 | Time: 02:16:39

The formation of Peacock Records in late 1949 dates back to an event nearly three years earlier when a young guitarist called Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown saw his chance to grab the spotlight - and took it with both hands! 'Gate' had never been backward in coming forward. When legendary bluesman T-Bone Walker fell ill in mid-performance, he leapt up, picked up the guitar left on the stage and started playing his own 'Gatemouth Boogie'. 15 minutes later a star was born. The owner of the club, Don Robey, ensured the young upstart put his autograph on a management contact. Robey would eventually found Peacock Records to release his music, and that's where the label's history starts.

This is (mostly) rip-roaring, Texas r&b/blues, with a few smoother sides and a bit of gospel to add depth to this pretty fine collection from Peacock Records. This is different than the JSP 4 CD set titled "Boogie Uproar", which also featured Texas blues/r&b. There's a few overlaps of songs between the two, but just a very few. This 2 CD set has more artists than the JSP set, and (arguably) better sound. Just remember that these are recordings from the post-war era recorded by a small label, so while these tracks have been cleaned up, they still have that period feel to them, which (to me) only adds to the listening experience. Plus (as usual) there's no real notes to speak of–only a few paragraphs about the label and some of the performers.

If you're reading this you're no doubt familiar with (especially) "Hound Dog", by "Big Mama" Thornton, "Boogie Uproar", by "Gatemouth" Brown, plus artists like Johnny Otis, Memphis Slim, and maybe a couple of others. But the majority of tracks here haven't been heard in years which makes this set worth owning. The Peacock label was owned by Don Robey, who also owned the Duke label. The One Day Music label (part of Not Now Music) has released a 3 CD set titled "I Pity The Fool, The Duke Records Story", which too is worth checking out. But even lesser known artists like Floyd Dixon, Paul Monday, Walter Brown, R.B. Thibadeaux, Jimmy McCracklin, and others are well worth hearing. Plus the gospel sides from The Bells of Joy, Sister Jessie May Renfro, and The Golden Harp Gospel Singers add even more depth to this collection.

While some tracks are stronger than others, everything here is a good/great example of post-war Texas r&b/blues. The accompaniment is mostly larger groups ("orchestras" as they were called), which included a rhythm section, piano, and (at least) a couple of horns. And the difference between the rougher arranged tunes and the smoother, more sophisticated songs (Johnny Otis) makes for some good listening. And when you add in "Gatemouth" Brown's swinging arrangements, plus those few gospel sides, this is well worth your money and time. This set together with the aforementioned Duke Records set will give you a good idea of what these labels were recording and releasing during this prime era of Texas music.

Review by Stuart Jefferson, Amazon.com

Nice package from aforesaid vaults, 1948-53. Houston label set up Don Robey, allegedly to record Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown, fresh from the Aladdin imprint, who kicks things off with the rockin' "Boogie Uproar", an instro featuring his full-fat, clangerous guitar. Three powerful vocals elsewhere. 50 tracks of shuckin', jumpin', jivin', boogiein' r&b, a handful of blues, three gospel outings. Gospel aside, all have big(ish) band backings, sax prominent, piano too. Most artists you should be familiar with if you're a blues/r&b afficianado, Big Mama Thornton, Floyd Dixon, Jimmy McCracklin, Elmore Nixon, Johnny Otis, Marie Adams are pretty obvious. Sonny Parker's "She Sets My Soul On Fire" is a solid rocker, Gladys Hill plumbs new depths with "Please Don't Touch My Bowl" (…"if you want my sugar…"), "Goin' Crazy" is a harmonica workout from Pete 'Guitar' Lewis (?) and Johnny Otis lays down a basic r&r template with the easy movin' "Rock Me Baby" (no, not that one). Gwen Johnson odd one out - is it doo wop, r&b or blues? Or all three? Whatever, I loved it all, don't see why you shouldn't either.
