The Ensemble Codex Sanctissima was founded in November 2011 with the purpose of spreading the Medieval and Renaissance music to the most varied audiences, with repertoires primarily selected among the most venerable sources of Christian sacred music, from the liturgical traditions of pre-Gregorian chant dating back to the sixth century, through the earliest forms of polyphony recorded in manuscripts of the ninth and tenth centuries, the works of the School of Notre-Dame and its correlates, the works of the troubadours and trouvères, the periods known as Ars Antiqua and Ars Nova, until the Renaissance of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. In this project we aim to also include some Oriental music, as is the case of an Armenian prayer in this first album.Tracklist:
Our first challenge has been satisfactorily accomplished: to acquire instruments built with historical fundamentation by luthiers of proven competence. The Instrumentarium of the group is assembled with copies based on iconography and organological studies from Germany, Spain, France, Armenia, England, Romania, Ukraine, Czech Republic and USA. Although most members have graduate and post-graduate degree in music, with some of them specializing in medieval music, the next step was to seek training specific for the task, with study trips to Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Morocco.
In line with the Catholic guidance of the Ensemble, we have conceived the project "Titles of the Virgin Mary" aiming to strengthen the Marian devotion by performing repertoires containing works inspired in this topic, directly or indirectly, without excluding some pieces of secular character to help contextualizing the programs. To this end, the concerts were given the shape of a "recital of worship " in which the works are connected by an itinerary presented to the public and integrated with the music, giving the characteristics of each piece, its origin, historical context and spiritual message.
One of the features that can draw more attention within our line of work is the adaptation to Brazilian Portuguese of the lyrics of some works, in part or in full. Undoubtedly, the motivation is primarily pastoral for better understanding and interaction, mainly with the public which is uninitiated in early music, strategy whose efficiency has been widely proven in practice. From the musicological point of view, although this procedure is unusual it should not arouse controversies if we consider the practice of contrafactum particularly common in the Middle Ages, which means the change of lyrics for a same given melody, including the adaptation of profane lyrics to melodies originally composed for sacred texts and vice versa, the change of language being very common on the process. In our case, we take care to keep the original message of the lyrics, just adapting them to the vernacular language of Brazil. With the release of this part two based on the Marian title "Health Of The Sick" (Salus Infirmorum) we rejoice to give another step in this project, which we hope will continue with future productions, always inspired by the titles of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, already honored in the name of the Ensemble and to whom we entrust our purposes, for the greater glory of God.
