De-Phazz is a musical group from the German city of Heidelberg. The name of the group stands for DEstination PHuture of jAZZ - ie "the future of jazz." The group was founded in 1997 by composer Pete Baumgartner, who engaged it in the production of advertising and a variety of art projects. De-Phazz has always been famous for their experimentations with various musical styles. This is largely due to the fact that often Pete invited new musicians and his was attracted and challanged to implement their ideas. This cooperative effort had the advantages of continuous fresh ideas.

In 1994, Pete met the german singer, composer, bassist, guitarist, and producer Barbara Lahr, was impressed by her powerful, deep voice, and he decided to work together. In 1997, with the participation of session musicians, De-Phazz recorded their debut album, dubbed "Detunized Gravity", providing an original cocktail of styles such as jungle, hip-hop, dub, soul and rhythm and blues. Two years later, in 1999, De-Phazz released a second studio work entitled "Godsdog". The style changed a bit and Godsdog was flirting with the sound of the acid-jazz. During the next period, the team from Heidelberg gaining momentum in a swing style, records a third album "Death By Chocolate ( 2001)" in the Universal studio. Soon their clips were on MTV, and the group began to regularly recieve invitations for tours.

In 2002, De-Phazz discography replenished with two more albums, "Daily Lama" and "Plastic Love Memory". A year later, the team made a brilliant tour ​​in Russia, gaining a lot of fans there, who were impressed by their original style and sophisticated arrangements. In 2005, the band released the album Natural Fake, made ​​in the best traditions of De-Phazz. Fans did not have long to wait for a new group's work: in 2007, the new album Days Of Twang appeared on the shelves. In 2008 came their first collection, called Big. In 2010, Pete and company have pleased their fans with the release of the new studio work LaLa 2.0, with sixteen great compositions, each of which is unique and has its own mood and character. In 2012, appeared the last album of this set, "Аudio Elastique", where the listener may find swinging acoustic collages meandering between classical chanson and pure Jazz

It is shocking that this album hasn't been released in the states. This album stands out among the crowd of limp, tired albums. The songs on Detunized Gravity a part trip-hop, part drum and bass, part soul and all good. The highlight is the slow burn of "No Jive" that mixes smoky vocals with a crisp cut and paste jazz beat. The album isn't 100% solid ("Lullaby drifts into Deep Forest territory at times) but between the punchy beats of "Lovechild" and the spaced out keyboards of "Free Drift" this is one hell of an album. One can only hope it will get released in the states with some bonus tracks when some record company comes to their senses.

Having seen the "no jive" video , I've been searching for their albums for months and finally found the "detunised gravity" one just a few days ago. The music combines jazz,d&b,some trip hop and a whole lot of other music styles but unlike so many bad attempts that just mix a lot of stuff together , they create a completely unique experience that just flows trough your mind but again, it's not mellow and repetitive stuff that just puts you to sleep .The music "lights you up" in a very new vay - very familiar and original at the same time making you move to the vibes . If only their label did a better job because these guys really deserve to go world wide . True musicians all the way . I fully recomend this not only to people who are into house,d&b etc. but also to everyone who likes good music.

With deep chunky rhythms and smooth, minimal male and female vocalists, De-Phazz's second album provided interesting vibrational funk in the most unexpected of environments. Although highlights "The Mambo Craze" and "April Shower" sometimes threatened the comic precociousness of Wevie Stonder, Godsdog's awkward mixture of German soul and trip-hop was once again satisfying, considerably improved from the forced feel of 1997's Detunized Gravity.

If you are into Lounge, De Phazz is one of the best at this genre, this album reflects all that lounge music should be: cool, stylish and elegant; perfect for a party or to listen while you are having a cocktail or a glass of red wine. Tracks such as Godsdog, the mambo craze, Cafe Coca, Jazz Music and radio sol, provide the perfect soundtrack for a great evening, I hope you will enjoy this album as much as I do.

This is one of the most elegants musical works ever by a nearly unknown band: The magnificents De-Phazz. The vocals are always sweet and smooth. Sometimes, the interpretations are sensual. The vibes are slow, kind of "chillout" mood. There are some trully inspired and magical moments such as the sensuality of "Jazz Music", "April Shower" and the superb "Time Slips", the pure pleasure of "Zero Zero" and "Happiness", the drum'n'bass/bossa nova/jazz of the sublime "Havana Moon"(maybe the best tune of "Godsdog"), or the musical landscape of "Anchorless". "Godsdog" is a very refined "cocktail" of sounds, vibes and inspired musical taste. Even if you're not a fan of electronic music, you should trully like this superb record. Don't miss this vibes, this elegance…

If you want to chill out and listen to some innovative music this is it. They remind me of the smooth works of Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Father of Bossa Nova. The same sensual waves and juxtapositioning of unsual ryhthms. From smooth trip-hop, soul, jazz and boss nova this album has it all. If you are jaded with the current music scene give this album a try. It is refreshing.

This album is my secret weapon at party's where hip cool rhythmic vibes are the obsession of every D.J. wanna-be. I play this one and heads turn and the night becomes magic. Please don't buy this because I want to be the one that delivers that amazing song that everyone is blown away and says "who's this"? Being made aware of this stellar group by Hotel Costes #1 I bought one of their earlier albums and loved it. Years later I wanted to catch up with them so I bought DBC and couldn't get over the intensity of this album. Did I already mention not to buy this and maybe perhaps buy another repetitive drumbeat release by Thievery Corporation. Please do not buy this album as it will open a window into a futuristic world of sound only Yello has delved. Stop now, this is your last warning.

De-Phazz, headed as always by Pit Baumgartner, has created again a real masterpice in its music style. Completely new sound, which is refreshing, subtle and seductive, makes you feel like anew born…somewhere in the 60's. Pat Appleton with her beautiful, sweet and mild voice paints the album with coziness and love. Karl Frierson adds again some tenderness and easy-flowing. Barbara Lahr is great with her mystic and profound voice. Otto Engelhardt and Ray George Randolph add amazing trombone and percussion pieces. Almost all songs, presented on this album, deserve a highest attention, but nevertheless, there are some which get into your mind at the very first listening to it. "Something Special", "Nu Chic", "Death By Chocolate", "Online" and "Love's Labour's Lost" are the ones which are my favourite. In general, I must admit that Pit Baumgartner has made smth unbelievable nowadays - he created completely new sounds without copying himself, with his "own" de-phazz's atmosphere, though, which you won't confuse with any existing music. A really must have for De-Phazz fans and for those, who like jazz with modern-influenced electro sound!

You've heard some tracks by this great electro-lounge German combo in several compilations (Bhudda Bar, Hotel Costes, etc.) You like them and you want to buy one of their albums but… which one? O.K. Hesitate no more, my friend, buy this one as it contains the best (and I mean the best!) tracks from their first three albums (Detunized Gravity, Godsdog and Death By Chocolate). But better be warned: after you hear this magnificent compilation, maybe you get infected by their groovy elegant sounds and need to buy the albums (as myself). Enjoy the party!

The sound of De Phazz is unique. The German based outfit combines the bouncing sounds and vocal stylistics of jazz, with the electro beats and twings of the modern groove and house scenes. The unique sound of De Phazz is mainly due to this perfect marriage of these two smooth genres. By employing the sounds of classic percussion and jazz instruments such as the trumpet and sax, De Phazz successfully create smooth electro-groove music with an unmissable swinging jazz theme. If your a fan of contemporary jazz, and dig the beats of groove, dub and house genres, De Phazz is a unique sound that you must check out.
This CD is a collection of the best De Phazz tracks from their first three albums. You get a CD packed with great De Phazz beats but it's hard to limit yourself to just this one CD. I was dissapointed not to see Havana Moon included as I'm a huge Latin jazz fan. The bottom line is that this is a "Best Of" album and it delivers perfectly. I suggest that new comers to De Phazz begin with this collection and progress from there. This is a great album for any occasion, with both bouncy and relaxed beats. The best of De Phazz gets five stars for it's unique and addictive electric-jazz sound. Death by Chocolate and Godsdog are highly recommended as follow-up purchases.

De-Phazz is a revolving cast of singers and performers around German jazz/electronica producer Pit Baumgartner. For more than 10 years, De-Phazz has released an interesting and unique blend of jazz, German cabaret music, electronica, hip hop, reggae/dancehall and r'n'b. Baumgartner changes his lineup between albums, and there are very few singers who stay for more than a record or two. The music is sung mostly in English, but there are songs in German and French, too. Everything has a delightfully old-school, continental European touch: a 40s-style cabaret tune here, a 50s Brazilian-inflected German Schlager there. But there's also some seriously funky, and not-German-at-all soul here: a track like `True North' shows off Baumgartner's production chops - chops that could grace any contemporary `big' r'n'b artist's album. The path he chooses, though, is quirkier than that. And it's a very likable quirkiness, one I find myself returning to time and again. The sound is cultured and aware of the world's musics in a way that British or American electronica isn't. And that makes this first-grade pop music that doesn't become dated.

If you like the retro-vocal melancholy, jazzy, cafeteria-style, insular-yet-panoramic, lush, smoky-lounge, orchestral, strange, ecstatic, DJ-scratchy, sublime, sampled and genre-bending compostions of Art of Noise, The Matthew Herbert Big Band, Enzso, Funki Porcini, Yello, Caleb's Cosmosis, Hugh Marsh, Future Sound of London, United Future Organization or Bowery Electric, then you will love this.

The MONUMENTAL task of describing a De-Phazz album makes your head really spin out of control, just as it does when you listen to it. Any of their albums, but this in particular, is as close to musical genius as it's going to get. An almost infinite number of sounds come from every possible direction and at different speeds but in the end they all end up dancing in PERFECT harmony. It REALLY is nothing short of SPECTACULAR. They push the musical envelope in ways that no other band has ever done before, with the exception of maybe Radiohead, in its own genre of course, and I really mean that ! I am telling you, the background music in heaven is DE-PHAZZ (perfect melody in perfect harmony). Now, after all that, you still want me to review this album? Well, let me give it a try. This is bizarrely beautiful NU-JAZZ. I mean, the sound is definitely jazz, but it flirts with hip-hop, soul, sometimes reggae, mambo and latin jazz, bossa nova, drum n' bass, house, trip-hop, etc. The feel of it all is sexy, VERY SEXY, trippy, atmospheric, RETRO COOL music that immediately sends you to a 60's smoky martini bar. The tuxedo-wearing waiter is coming straight at you with another glass (and you can happily see the two olives in it). The majestic use of trumpets and sax, the talented drummer (and drum programming), the dreamy electronic sounds coming from the multiple keybords, the perfectly-timed scratchings, the sexy, hip vocals, and the impressive production of this album makes this, and any other De-Phazz album for that matter, a one-in-a-million gem. You want hip, sexy, retro cool downtempo nu-jazz? Look no further, you will love this one.

Well De Phazz has put out another great one. This band puts every style into the mix but has a sound all its own. This one is a little less dub and a little more gospell but it swings, every song is a keeper. Its cool lounge similar to Death by chocolate . The recording sounds great but better to play it on a larger system then a boom box this Cd is packed with sound and fun. My only hope is they come to the states sometime soon.

De-Phazz's oxymoronically titled "Natural Fake" is a cocktail of neo-modern lounge, jazz, funk, soul and r&b. This German group has marvellously evolved the "lounge-sounds" they delivered on the classics "Death By Chocolate" and "Godsdog" with catchy hooks, quirky samples and gorgeous vocals from both male and female. There's 18 songs listed–a bit gluttonous to most–but at least the songs don't meander, and manage to keep your attention from beginning to end. True fans of De-Phazz will appreciate this new sound and not expect a repeat of their previous material. Highly Recommended!!!

When oh when will America wake up to this band? Perhaps, years from now after they have peaked (each release makes you believe they have and then POW! another masterpiece) and America experiences another "I've always been into Floyd, it's just suddenly become popular to like them". They are of course a DJ's band / collective and their style is a plural. From Drum and bass to exquisite Funk, from turntables sampling to trombone solos. This newest release certainly has Twang, a tangible increase in the use of guitars, just when you thought only Air could use them in Electronica. This is the future of Popular Music, large bands roaming the land, people dancing again to Jazz for this is Jazz in a way too. There are real songs here, not electronic jams where every agrees that where the key changes is called the break. The Future is good for modern music, there will be venues eventually where one will be able to go dance with your love. I see it, it's there just over the horizon. From the outset of this pleasurable romp you are greeted with plenty of twang, but as you kick back and relax into it you find out some quiet hidden gems that aren't as obvious as "Hell Alright". There's some really sweet downtempo here that begs you to resist its charms. "Dancing With My Hands", "It Will Turn Out Right" and "Nonsensical Thing" are all polished low-key tunes that beautifully complement the jazzier and more upbeat numbers. 2009 release, yet another 'big' shot crafted by the creative outfit led by mastermind Pit Baumgartner. Big means "back to the future" for the band and its unique sonic world of sound. Although a lot of the track titles might sound familiar, this is anything but your average "greatest hits" collection. Instead, De Phazz rise to the occasion and reinterpret their best and most successful songs with a bit of an ironic smile on their faces and "a little help" from a real, full blown big band. And so it comes as no surprise that all songs on Big organically develop quite a stylish and tasty life of their own, extending the huge potential of the original compositions in many exciting directions. Big tunes, big band, big expectations… big things going on for real!

A friend recommended this album and I haven't stopped thanking him. From the first track to the last, a masterpiece. I can't stop playing it in my car and doing the mambo moves. It drives the other drivers crazy.
