Just as autumn must follow summer, Senior must follow Junior. Röyksopp's poppy, peppy record from 2009, Junior included guest-star vocalists, bright effects, and catchy melodies; Röyksopp's dreamy, downtempo record from 2010, Senior includes neither vocals nor much in the way of four-four beats. For those who jumped on the Junior bandwagon - and there were a lot of jumpers, since it surpassed all of their earlier records on the charts - the music here will be seen as formless mood music, for better or worse. For those who enjoyed Röyksopp's earlier downbeat material, this might seem more like home, although it has less character and warmth than Melody A.M. or even The Understanding. Much of it is simply a sedate version of Junior; for instance, "The Alcoholic" could have easily been slotted on Junior if vocals were added and its tempo was increased slightly…

For more than 30 years, Beth Orton has been our antenna to the cosmos, the poet laureate of forces too vast to take in all at once. A testament to her artistry, ‘The Ground Above’ is Orton’s most direct and unapologetic music to date; urgent, raw, embodied and emotionally fearless, moving between subconscious expression and expansive, timeless song craft. Her voice, from whispered incantation to primal wail, equally delivers melodies reminiscent of classic songbook form. Throughout the album, Orton documents survival and renewal, motherhood and identity, political unease, and the ongoing choice to stay - in love, in art, and in the world.

Genre: Stage & Screen, Soundtrack, Indie Rock, Electronic, Post-Punk

Skins: The Soundtrack stands as an incredibly raw, eclectic, and era-defining archive that brilliantly encapsulates the hedonistic, messy, and vibrant spirit of mid-2000s youth culture. Released in 2007 by Universal Music to sound-track the groundbreaking British television drama series, this compilation functions as a premier time capsule of the UK underground, masterfully blending jagged indie rock, pioneering dubstep architectures, classic post-punk, and hazy trip-hop textures. Spanning well over an hour and a quarter of pristine audio, the 19-track landscape operates with a restless, chaotic kinetic energy. The tracklist flows fluidly through standout anthems, opening with Fat Segal's iconic, atmospheric Skins Theme Tune and moving instantly into Soulwax's blistering electro-rock remix of Gossip's Standing In The Way Of Control. Shifting from the punchy indie dance-floor drive of Bloc Party and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to the deep bassweight of Skream, the raw hip-hop swagger of Roots Manuva, and closing with Mike Bailey’s poignant, show-stopping ensemble rendition of Cat Stevens' Wild World, this high-fidelity document remains an indispensable monument for soundtrack collectors and indie purists worldwide.

The marriage of jazz and electronica has, too often, produced bland and lackadaisical offspring. But the United Future Organization manages to bring together elements of both, along with traces of club music and "rare groove," and create something that is both elegant and rhythmically propulsive, not to mention structurally interesting. Their latest album is an excellent example of what they can do at their best. On "Tres Amigos" Cuban percussion, horns, and piano are goosed along by a thick, bouncy bassline; "Flying Saucer" blends disco rhythm guitar with jazzy horns and a gorgeous vocal courtesy of Dee Dee Bridgewater; "Dans Ce Desert" is a surprisingly funky 6/8 workout with flamenco castanets, electric piano, and French vocals.

Once again finding harmony and creating alchemy between seeming opposites, on Volta Björk is bold but thoughtful, delicate yet strong, accessible and avant. The intricacy and complexity of projects like Medúlla and Drawing Restraint 9 suggested that she might have left the more direct side of her work behind, but Volta's opening track and lead single, "Earth Intruders," puts that notion to rest: the song literally marches in, riding a bubbling, ritualistic beat courtesy of Timbaland and Konono No. 1's electric thumb-pianos. Björk howls "Turmoil! Carnage!" like incantations over the din, and after several albums' worth of beautiful whispers, it's a joy to hear her raise her voice and volume like this. "Wanderlust" follows and provides the yin to "Earth Intruders"' yang, its horns and brooding melody giving it the feel of a moodier, more contemplative version of "The Anchor Song"…
