50 years ago, the great star of Arabic music, the legendary Oum Kalthoum, passed away. She was the most important voice, and artist (and maybe human being) for the vast majority of Arabs around the world (regardless of religion !!) In 2015, I paid tribute to her by reinterpreting one of her greatest songs, Al Leila Wa Leila, in a way that had never been done before.

Faced with criticism in the conservative jazz world and in the arabic music conservative communities, I almost made the huge mistake of not releasing it. For some, it was “too jazz” and “disrespectful.” For others, it “had no place in jazz” and “brought nothing new.”

The backlash against this initiative—which, beyond honoring a globally respected artist, aimed to show that we all share the same melodies, no matter our origins, beliefs, or convictions—was shockingly intense. Enough to discourage even the most enthusiastic…

But I didn’t give up on the idea. And after recording it, I knew I had something powerful. The tour took us to more than 40 countries, it became one of the best-selling albums in my entire discography, and I still remember a deeply intrigued Wynton Marsalis when we performed at the Lincoln Center in New York. That performance led to my later collaboration with Wynton.

In short, this project deserved to be celebrated. So, with great joy, I’m announcing 30 exceptional dates for KALTHOUM.

A unique tour to bring this album back to life for its 10th anniversary, while also honoring 50 years since the passing of the Star of the East.

"KALTHOUM" is a celebration of women who have changed the course of history and whose artistic influence has had an impact on our lives today. I have therefore chosen an emblematic figure, a true monument to the history of the Arab people, and who is also the voice I have listened to the most since my early childhood: Oum Kalthoum.

Pianist Frank Woeste and I took one of this Egyptian diva's greatest songs, and we "translated" it into jazz that's rather conventional, but hopefully it innovates in the way it mixes cultures: the song is "Alf Leila Wa Leila" ("The Thousand and One Nights"). The song was composed in 1969 by Baligh Hamidi, taking the form of a suite lasting around an hour (as often in those days), with a three-minute chorus and verses of between five and twenty-five minutes. A large part of the piece is reserved for improvisation, both in the original version and in this one, but this suite is above all a series of paintings, and the way it's set up was very exciting to re-transcribe.

We recorded and mixed it in New York with the same crew as for the album "Wind" in 2011, which was also a homage (to Miles Davis), so I naturally thought of "Kalthoum" as continuing that fine adventure on record, with Larry Grenadier (double bass), Clarence Penn (drums), Mark Turner (saxophone) and Frank Woeste on piano.
