Klaus Schulze – Cyborg
1976 | label: Ariola Benelux | Electronic | APE lossless | 2LP conversion | covers | 651mb
This record has lived.
It collected the residue of perpetual, dense fogs of hashish & marijuana smoke; got soaked in beer and wine….lying around unprotected for weeks on end, it gathered dust in obscure rooms and had mouldering food on dirty dishes for company.
All this because it was its ill-starred destiny to belong to a careless owner who happened to see some wild times. Hm, that will be me, yes.
I’ll have to be straight, then, and warn you in advance the conversion of this brave piece of vinyl is not perfect. Try as I may, I couldn’t rub out all proof of its rough existence. There’s a single, nasty “boinxxx” between ca. 32 – 32.5 secs of side three, resulting in the old friend skipping one or two notes. Pity. But it’s an honest scar, worn with dignity.
Keeping the above facts in mind, a major part of the music has miraculously been preserved.
You will still be able to enjoy the beautiful farfisa organ sounds of Synphära unfolding like a mysterious orchid; and the monotonous but passionate, compact drone of my favourite track Conphära is as maddening as ever.
Somewhere else on this board I said I personally consider this Schulze’s masterpiece. Together with Tangerine Dream’s Atem, it’s probably the best thing to come out of the Berliner Schule. Had Schulze persisted in this vain, he might have been an acknowledged member of the ‘serious’ avant-garde.
As it is, der Klaus went his own singular way.
Here it is, then. Cyborg. Front, back and insides of the original BRAIN coverart (by surrealist painter Urs Amann) included. Scanning was not an easy thing to do. The insides, for example, form one large painting from the left to the right, so it took eight scans and a lot of puzzling to get it together. I doubt you’ll find Cyborg scans this size anywhere on the net.
