E-Scape 2020 is a collection of exclusive tracks from artists scheduled to perform at E-Scape 2020 which was cancelled due to Covid-19. The festival was to have been a charity event in aid of MENCAP and so proceeds from the E-Scape 2020 album are being donated to the charity along with monies collected through a Just Giving page. E-Scape 2020 is a varied collection of spacey electronic music combined with some gently rhythmic sequencer offerings that flow effortlessly as a cohesive, and very chilled, electronic music album. Volt, Ian Boddy, Robert Fox, Ron Boots, David Wright and others.

The IIKKI label put Seabuckthorn aka guitarist Andy Cartwright and Australian photographer Sophie Gabrielle in touch with each other who then went on to create Through A Vulnerable Occur together. Cartwright uses finger picking, bows and open tunings to create his music, a fine balance between ambient and folk. Gabrielle’s work is influenced by psychology, mythology and spiritualism.

Genre: Ambient | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: Somnia Records (somnia 006)

Somnia is proud to present an album of delicate sensibilities, and subtle heart filled vistas. Written as a dedication to his two daughters, this Motionfield's album captures something wistful and nostalgic, like conversations from old friends overheard in dreams. Reminiscent of Casino vs. Japan, Ulrich Schnauss, and Boards of Canada, this album still describes a unique and personal stroll through misty locales. Fragments of a memory painted in fading light, places you recognize but cant place, a subtle embrace. Limited to 777 copies worldwide, soy inks on recycled paper, sewn and sealed in wax with incredible cover art by Ray Massini.

Genre: Ambient | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: em:t (em:t 1196)

The four-part "Nyala" is Stone's first full-length for the Nottingham-based Em:t label, whose usual base of post-rave electronic experimenters is pretty severely shaken by Stone's unflinching, often very dissonant textural sense. The piece works slowly through vague, minimal melodic passages to busier, more antagonistic sections, with repeating elements tweaking and morphing over time.

EAC Rip | FLAC (tracks+log+.cue) - 369 Mb | MP3 CBR 320 kbps - 178 Mb | 01:14:12
Ambient | Label: Ambientologist

A necessary follow-up his first album on Ambientologist, Kval strengthens Henrik's crossing of medieval evocation and meditative ambient cello. Where Själ sought to remain non-directional in its expression, Kval turns on a central theme, guiding a narrative through the mundane and the sublime.

4AD, Rough Trade | # RTD 120.0032.2 | Time: 00:38:08
Dark Wave, World Fusion, Ambient, Dream Pop

With this amazing album, Dead Can Dance fully took the plunge into the heady mix of musical traditions that would come to define its sound and style for the remainder of its career. The straightforward goth affectations are exchanged for a sonic palette and range of imagination. Calling it "haunting" and "atmospheric" barely scratches even the initial surface of the album's power. The common identification of the duo with a consciously medieval European sound starts here – quite understandable, when one considers the mystic titles of songs, references to Latin, choirs, and other touches that make the album sound like it was recorded in an immense cathedral.

World Fusion, New Age, Ambient | Label: Domo | # 73015-2 | Time: 01:53:01

From the opening chant of the Yakushiji monks, it is apparent that this is going to be a special offering from Kitaro. The legendary World Music pioneer’s live album is a two-CD set recorded over three evenings in the sacred Yakushiji Temple in the ancient Japanese capital, Nara. With full instrumentation, Kitaro reprises nine favorite compositions from earlier albums, plus his Golden Globe Award-winning theme from the Oliver Stone film Heaven & Earth and two previously unreleased tracks. This is a tour de force for Kitaro and ensemble. All the drama, grace and humanity of his usual offerings are here with the added immediacy of the live recording and the profound spirit of the Yakushiki monks who appear on the previously unreleased "Wa" in addition to the opening track. Live in Yakushiji is a broad and deep journey, to inner realms as well as exotic earthly destinations.

Em:t Records was a British record label, based in Nottingham, which specialized in ambient electronic music. They were active from 1994 to 1998, and after a period of bankruptcy, re-established themselves in 2003 under new ownership and management. In summer 2006, the label officially ceased operations again, although by this time it had not been active for some time. All of the albums on the original run of em:t releases fit into the general category of Ambient music, or downtempo. Most prominent were samples of animal noises recorded in the wild - heard on releases by Woob, Qubism, Beatsystem, Miasma, and others.

Neutron 9000 may not be as familiar a name as Global Communication, Biosphere, Pete Namlook or any of the other ambient masters, but they certainly deserve to be.

Somnia is proud to present an atmospheric and delicate journey through textural dub landscapes and machinistic techno ambience. Exquisite sculptures of reverb drenched chords and clicky percussion wind and float their way through hazy electronic vistas. Representing a palette of restrained minimalism and more beat oriented fragment of the somnia aesthetic, this 9 track album establishes P. Laoss, a.k.a Vakuum Sounds (native state records) as a mature and thoughtful designer of intricate dub and digitalia. Limited to 777 copies worldwide, soy inks on recycled paper, sewn and sealed in wax with incredible cover art by Ray Massini.

Humus is the second effort from Italian ambient composer Emanuele Errante. Humus unfolds slowly through a symphony of organic minimalism, evolving and growing over a course of 11 tracks. Classical flourishes adorn warm and inviting textural sketches, and subtle electronic manipulation pervades a humid ambient environment. Reich inspired microcosmic rhythms unfold and undulate beneath wide pastel landscapes. Building from the same aesthetic starting point as Marsen Jules, Deaf Center, and the Miasmah label, Emanuele Errante makes a personal and inviting musical statement which fits right at home in the Somnia catalog, floating between worlds and creating a rich journey for headphone listening.

In NYX electronic composer Bert Barten (Clan Of Xymox) collaborated with Hanz Meyer and Chris Deckker. Genre: Electronic, IDM, Ambient | RAR 3% Rec. | Label: em:t (em:t 0095)

Gas 0095 is an album by Mat Jarvis (aka Gas). The album was first released in 1995 and soon became one of the more sought after albums in all of electronica. Many would describe Gas 0095 as ambient, which is probably due to there being a decent ambient component of the album, its otherworldly sound, and even Mat Jarvis sharing an alias with the better known Gas of Wolfgaing Voigt (who is a prolific ambient producer). But Gas 0095 is really not ambient, but more in the IDM, downtempo mold. There are lively, interesting, colorful sounds everywhere, and a few pretty upbeat tracks; definitely not something you could or would want to shove into background listening. While Gas 0095 has several claims to underground electronic music fame, its best is that it is quite simply a fantastic CD. Gas 0095 is just one of those albums that you find yourself enjoying time after time, one of those albums you can always listen to.

The first in a series of various artist compilations, alongside more in-depth artist focused releases, Virtual Dreams will delve into music produced during the 1990’s that redefined the boundaries of ‘Ambient’. This was music that explored the possibilities of Ambient within a new setting, created often by House and Techno producers for a world beyond dance floors but made very much with the pre-clubbing and post-clubbing listener in mind.
